To be fair, I’ve just checked myself and it seems that it’s not a technical issue, I always use the app where photos do not show without opening the thread, but I’ve tried accessing MN on my phone browser and the op post and photos are indeed shown without opening the thread, as you can see from my screen shot.

I still think the first comment was a to the OP, was a bit arsey given the context but I owe @Sudagamean apology for my own arsey response to her where I said she should have known it was a glitch if the photo was visible without clicking the thread. She was telling the truth about how she saw it , I’m sorry @Sudagame,

FWIW whether pictures show seems to depend on how you access the forums.

If I start at mumsnet.com then click on the 'Active' button, I get pictures for some threads (presumably the few that actually have pics in the first post).

If I start at mumsnet.com then from the menu select 'Talk > Active discussions', I get no pics at all.
