Smell the pad, amniotic fluid has a distinctive smell.

My waters went at 28 weeks, went to hospital and they tested the pad to conclude it was amniotic fluid. Had the baby two days later. He’s thirty now ! Get checked out .

Yup!! Hoping to be the first with a nice bitchy comment without checking where you were. Well done.

OP any concern or change in pregnancy should be checked out for sure. I hope you are ok.

PinkBobby · 20/02/2026 21:37

Had similar 2 weeks ago and it ended up being my waters breaking. I was prepared for the movie style flood but it can just be a trickle. Put another pad in (so you can monitor whether it’s still coming out) and speak to your hospital asap. It is always better to get checked out and keep you both safe.

What did you expect? A bunch of daffodils?

Dollymylove · 20/02/2026 21:39

Phone your local maternity unit. They will advise

freakingscared · 20/02/2026 21:45

That’s a bit of the mucus plug , it’s nothing to worry about hun

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 20/02/2026 21:48

It does look like part of the mucus plug, I would get checked out but the mucus plug can come away and then replenish itself so it’s not necessarily anything to worry about it but as you are reasonably early I’d want to get it checked.

In fairness, there was a bit of a clue in the title.

The pic came up with the OP on the same screen.

@Sudagame maybe next time don’t mindlessly trawl active threads without checking which board they are on??

I didn't , l just opened Mumsnet on my phone and there it was at the top.

The warning is literally in the title before you click through 🤦‍♀️

It came up with pic and all with the title, didn't click on anything.

Bananafofana · 20/02/2026 21:52

Please go to hospital now (with the pad in a plastic bag and a new one in your pants). My waters went at 28 weeks and 36 weeks and both times I couldn’t smell anything “chemical” and was convinced it was wee or normal discharge. I hope you’re on your way to hospital. They have a little litmus test type stick that changes colour if it’s amniotic fluid so no guessing. Good luck.

Nope

Solost92 · 20/02/2026 21:53

Better safe than sorry. Take it in with you. There there for this reason and they'd rather see you tonight and say "yeah it's fine, it's absolutely nothing." Than see you tomorrow or the day after and say "I'm sorry" not worth the risk. They literally won't think you're wasting their time at all.

I just opened Mumsnet to look back on a thread lve been following and this thread complete with pic was above that thread.
I didn't click on anything or open anything except Mumsnet ,in the usual way.

Assuming you aren’t new to MN and you’ve used it for a while. you’ll know that that’s not how threads open, so if that did happen as you say you describe, did you not think it odd? What made you choose to leave the comment you did to someone who is worried about their pregnancy? You could have contacted MNHQ or posted on site stuff.

AlwaysSometimesNever · 20/02/2026 22:05

You do need checking over. Looks very much like mucus plug. You can lose some but you won’t know if it’s compromised anything without being examined properly.
Good luck. It’s more than likely fine but I’d err on the side of caution.

OK, can we please park your reaction to the picture now? This thread is in danger of getting derailed at a time when OP is clearly very worried and needs advice.

Have you spoken to them OP?

sellthebigissue · 20/02/2026 22:08

OP, call triage just to be sure.
Amniotic fluid does have a distinct smell however if its small amounts you may not smell anything and thats quite a bit of mucus.
Im sure all will be fine but at 31 weeks, its best to be checked out! X
