Scan dates not adding up

Hi all, I’m looking for some help please…
I had a private early reassurance scan yesterday. Going by my LMP on 27/12/25 I should have been 7 weeks + 1 day.
They saw a gestational sac measuring 9.3mm,
a yolk sac but no embryo. Due to the size of my gestational sac they dated me at 5 weeks + 4 days.
I was tracking my LH and BBT and I ovulated on CD 14 which was 09/01/26.
Can I still hold hope? I’m all a bit confused. The last 3/4 days I haven’t felt pregnant either, after having sore boobs, cravings and tiredness for a week or so.

the sonographer also noted a hematoma in my lower uterine segment measuring about 21 x 11 x 20mm. I’ve had no bleeding or spotting. Just cramps on and off.

I’m a FTM at 37 and feeling very confused about this all. Do I need to prepare myself for a miscarriage?

Hi OP, sorry you’re going through all this uncertainty. I think in that situation I would prepare for a miscarriage as you sound certain of your dates.

This sounds very worrying for you. Did you have an obstetric led scan or one of the high street souvenir scans? If the latter (which I am assuming based on your post) then you need to book an obstetrics scan, usually through a private hospital or an NHS scan (but with no symptoms I’m not sure they’ll see you at the EPU). FWIW I understand (I’m not medical) the heartbeat should be present “around” 6 weeks, but babies don’t grow along linear lines. I had bleeding at about 6w and there was no heartbeat, but it was 2 weeks before there would see me again (he’s 4 now). What did the sonographer offer? Follow up? Advice? Next steps? It really makes me angry that souvenir places can offer “reassurance” scans that are only reassuring if everything is as expected, where is their duty of care to you? You should be receiving support or guidance, not turning to the internet. I am so sorry you’re going through this. I know how scary bleeding in early pregnancy was and the waiting to know if he was alive was torture.

Hi OP, I agree that it doesn't look good but don't lose heart. I have had it goes either way.
Be kind to your self

I do want to add though, whatever the outcome, what will be will be. I found it reassuring knowing that there was nothing I could do to affect the outcome. Frustrating too. But very much it’s in the hands of the universe (or God depending on your beliefs). Be kind to yourself x

I had something very similar last month, went for a scan expecting to be 7+ weeks and was measuring 5. I was referred to the EPU for a follow up scan (I had to request the GP did this).
Sadly it did end in a miscarriage for me. I hope you have a better outcome, best of luck.

Thanks for your replies, I had the scan at window to the womb. All they advised was to get a scan in 2 weeks.
I’ve been left feeling very confused and upset.
if it helps I had my bfp on cycle day 25 (11dpo) 20/01/26

Why don’t you call your EPAU OP ? They will be able to support you and hopefully get you in for a scan. So sorry you’re going through this

24Hay · 16/02/2026 07:15

I think I will….My local EPU are GP referral only, hopefully they’ll see me. Thank you x

It was similar for me - I knew that I couldn’t be 5 weeks due to when I got a bfp. I didn’t want to wait for two weeks to be seen again at another private scan provider as they can’t offer any diagnoses or management options. I called the GP and explained that I’d had a scan which showed a discrepancy in dates and for a referral to the early pregnancy unit. I’d also had some spotting which they took into consideration. If you’d like to know about the rest of the experience I am happy to share either here or via pm but as I said before, it wasn’t the outcome I hoped for so wouldn’t want to cause you more anxiety.
it’s a really horrible place to be and you are in my thoughts.

Tbh at that gestation if EPU take you in for a scan they will most likely ask you to come back again in 2 weeks.

In case it helps I had got pregnant for the first time aged 40, had 2 miscarriages including 2 SCH, and 3rd pregnancy is now a lively wonderful 2 year old.

Hey all, thank you for all your replies.
Just to update and to help anyone else finding themselves in a similar situation. Sadly we lost our baby.
I started to naturally miscarry 4 days after I wrote the post.
