Miscarriage 'grey area'

Looking to see if anyone is/has similar situation to me. Im 12 weeks today (or supposed to be) i went to hospital Friday night (3 days ago) as I had had brown spotting all week with the odd period pain and then a gush of red blood Friday night (with no pains). They did a pelvic examination and said i was in a miscarriage grey area my cervix was still closed but they could see blood. They couldn't do an ultrasound out of hours and have booked me in for tomorrow for one. Since then I have gone back to brown blood with a couple of small clots and the occasional period pain. I am convinced ive lost my baby and that there will be no heart beat tomorrow. The waiting is the hardest part.
Just to add pregnancy wise only symptoms ive had is brest tenderness which has now gone which is also another reason im thinking this is a miscarriage. But then online says symptoms can disappear around 12 weeks.

I’m sorry this is happening to you, it’s so hard.

The only thing you can do is wait for the scan for your answer and hopefully it will be a positive outcome.

Everything crossed for you in hope x

Thank you the waiting is so hard it feels like it already been an eternity and I have to now wait another 26 hours till my scan😫x

Do you have a big teaching hospital with an epu within travelling distance.

aLogLady · 09/02/2026 16:28

There are other reasons for bleeding other that miscarriage. What a shame they couldn’t scan you then and there. I’m glad you’re being seen as soon as tomorrow, I hope very much that the baby is fine and it’s something else causing the bleeding (such as a sub chorionic hematoma which are pretty common and can cause quite dramatic bleeding without harming the pregnancy). It’s good that your cervix is closed. Wishing you the best for tomorrow and I hope you can make time pass quickly till then.

Thank you, its the pains and the loss of symptoms as well thats making me think its a miscarriage. If id just had bleeding I don't think id be as worried

@CountrySpirit my symptoms went around 9 weeks (nausea and always intermittent sore boobs) so I wouldn’t think of that as being too significant at 12 weeks. I did had a medium hematoma that bled around week 6-8, though I wasn’t experiencing period pain, more pain in my side (I also had a bleeding ovary and a para ovarian cyst 🫣). Is the pain constant? Rhythmic? Could it possibly be ordinary pregnancy pain that your fear is heightening? I can imagine how frightened you are, but just try to get through the next 20ish hours with as much distraction as possible. Lots of people here wishing you the best.

Its sporadic cramping. It comes and goes. I could have nothing for ours then random cramp from 30 seconds or so then nothing again for hours. Sometimes it can be a couple in an hour. There seems no consistency to it. My boob's have been extremely tender my whole pregnancy but this week when the brown blood started my brest tenderness went away.

Ive Had sporadic cramping my whole pregnancy, still do at 20 weeks though more often earlier, but I suppose it’s about reading what’s normal for you. I’m no midwife or doctor, the best thing is getting a scan which you’re doing. What time is it at? I hope you have someone to go with if you’d find that comforting.

Oh @CountrySpirit What a tough weekend you've had thinking all this through.

Fingers crossed everything is well. Is was a good sign that your cervix was closed. Brown blood generally indicates old blood.

Possibly TMI but had you had intercourse in the 24 / 48 hours previous to the bleeding?

I've had miscarriages (all spontaneous and started with bleeding but always became heavy and period like within 24 hours) and I am currently 22w and had bleeding during this pregnancy over a few days - my cervix was closed and I had to wait a few days for a scan at EPU but they put it down to pelvic pressure causing bleeding. They so checked for a haematoma which can cause bleeding all throughout pregnancy but is not a danger to the baby.

In terms of symptoms, generally symptoms start to ease off around the 10-12 week mark when the placenta takes over and you're going into 3rd trimester so that could just be coincidental.

Will be thinking of you while you wait for your scan. Hope you have someone to support you irl. It’s still possible all is not lost but I know I’d be feeling like you. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Mind yourself

oh @CountrySpirit I’m so sorry to read this. How cruel to find out at 12 weeks. I’ve been through the same but found out much earlier and so it wasn’t a shock at 10 weeks which I’m so grateful for. If you need support going through it the next few days and beyond I’ll be here to listen. Your body knows what to do. I’m so sorry.
