Early scan- lmp or ovulation/conception

When you’ve gone for an early scan has your dates/measurements matched your lmp or ovulation/conception?

I am sooooo confused with mine.

lmp 8/12
ovulation between 20-22
early response 29/12
25/1 went for an early reassurance scan at what I thought was 6w6d crl measured 2.2mm making me 5w1d.
obviously I’ve panicked and rung epu, got a scan at the hospital on 30/1 and measuring 3.5mm 6weeks, no heartbeat yet which they said is normal. They’re not concerned cos dates match conception, but I’m sure they add 2 weeks for gestation age.

Sorry for your stress

its really positive youve had growth between the scans - have epu give you another scan to check for a heartbeat? ☺️

Two weeks time. It’s so long to be living with uncertainty. Everyone keeps telling me it’s impossible with the dates and that I’ve lost 😞

It’s so awful that you have to wait so long

If you cant settle why dont you ring EPU on Monday and explain your dates and why you are concerned? They might be able to give you some advice xx

Did the EPU tell you they measure from conception rather than add the two weeks on? Got to be honest any time I’ve been there they always add the 2 extra weeks on. I agree with the previous poster, I would ring and just check with them that that’s what they mean. Because I would ask them at what point they do start adding the two weeks on. The 12 week scan includes the extra two weeks - so from conception the person is actually 10 weeks but they call it the 12 week scan. Even at my IVF clinic they say they will only scan from 7 weeks because at that point they will definitely see heartbeat if it’s viable. And they add the two weeks on there as well.

Going by your positive test date, assuming you had a really early positive at 7dpo, your gestational age on your scan on 30th would have been 7 weeks 4 days. I guess by losing the extra two weeks you’re only 5 weeks 4 days. So fair enough I would understand not seeing a heartbeat at 5.4 but going by my experiences where they always use gestational age they should see one at 7.4. But I still don’t really understand why they would tell you they use from conception at this point when other places don’t.

I do get that they would tell you not to worry and send you away though. They always do that in case you’ve got your dates wrong. I’ve had them say to me in the past that I probably just got my dates wrong. I was 6.4 but was measuring 5.4 (with a faint heartbeat) But I knew I didn’t and sure enough 2 weeks later they confirmed a MMC.

They wouldn’t explain anything to me which is very frustrating because they know I have lost before, and they know I have had heathy pregnancies before so I’m not daft.
she said there’s growth and it’s classed as a viable pregnancy. But any unbearable pain on bleeding ring up.
now Everytime I get a cramp or twinge I’m worried and checking Everytime I go the loo.
I even went to the gp before ringing epu and he just said he’s not concerned

But did the EPU say they measure from conception or did they just say 6 weeks? I was just checking who was the “they” who weren’t concerned as dates match conception.

Really though all you can do is wait. It’s awful but EPUs don’t ever seem to want to be honest. I guess it’s so they don’t get complaints if they are wrong. But I have always found them to breezily say oh your dates are probably wrong and for 5 weeks it all looks perfect etc. Even when you know you can’t be 5 weeks etc. And I guess for some people it is true and their dates are wrong. I did once have an EPU tell me my dates were probably wrong despite having IVF and I knew the exact date the embryo was put back. I did find a nice nurse towards the end of the appointment when they were booking my second scan. She asked me if I was still taking my IVF meds. I said no I had stopped when I had the scan at the IVF clinic showing 5 weeks when should have been 7.5. She nodded and said I agree. So that was her way of saying she knew it wasn’t going to be a happy ending but still needed to book the second scan 2 weeks later just in case.

It was the nurse at epu that said it, but wouldn’t confirm or deny if when they measure from just that it matches conception

So they said you’re measuring 6 weeks but wouldn’t say if that’s from conception or gestational age? I’ve never heard of a place measuring from conception so you’d assume its gestational age. But it’s weird they won’t confirm that. Sounds like they just don’t want to commit to saying anything which is what they often do. They don’t want to worry or give hope. They are just being factual I guess.

I honestly just wish they were upfront with me and honest. I hate being brushed off, I’m a big girl and take whatever news it could be.

but I suppose I should try and stay positive and hope they couldn’t measure properly and the scan the baby has ‘caught up’ as other people have mentioned

I guess your baby grew “6 days” in the 5 days from scan 1 to scan 2. I measured 3 days behind at 7 weeks and at somewhere between 8-9 weeks (can’t remember exactly)
by the 12 week scan (which was on exactly 12 weeks) baby was 3 days ahead!!
(im sure of dates exactly as it was IVF)
