Hello ! Im 33 yo and 10 weeks pregnant. My OB advised me to take 800 mcg folic acid for 2-3 months while TTC. The month I conceived I was taking another vitamins including another 400 mcg. So for a few weeks before conception I was taking 1200 mcg. Over the time I conceived I was taking 800mcg. But when I found out I was advised to take another vitamins that also invluded 400 mcg folic acid. So the total amount is 1200mcg. Thankfully It was for only 5 days and then I figured out and stopped. Then I continued with 800mcg. But now Im super worried because another OB told me this amount is way too much and I should quit for a week and measure my folate levels. So now Im freaking out I ruined my baby! I know there are people prescribed 5000 mcg but they have a reason to do so. I have no risk factors !

Please don’t worry. You urinate excess folic acid. I was fit and healthy but advised to take ultra high doses due to a family member (on paternal side) having some disabilities. I took well over 1000 mg for my entire pregnancy under the advice from Kings in London I did this in all of my pregnancies. The doses you are taking and that you reduced and stopped are fine.

unless you have any risk factors continue with 400 mg through your pregnancy

Don’t worry! Lots of women are prescribed 5mg per day (so 4 times what you took) for different risk factors. You pee out what your body doesn’t need.
