Are my dates wrong?

My last period was 12 December 30 day cycle, according to my app I ovulated around Christmas, making me 6 weeks pregnant. Went for an early scan today and they said measuring the gestational sac I am only around 4 weeks, but I tested positive last Tuesday, a very strong positive which means I was only 3 weeks? Is this Normal? They said on the scan everything looks like it’s Normal for an early pregnancy but obviously can’t say much at this stage with no yok sac. Just wanted to know if this has happened to anyone before? To be testing positive so early? TIA

It is possible to get a positive at 3 weeks, I had one at 3 weeks 2 days, but it definitely wouldn't be a strong positive at that stage.

I would still hold a small amount of hope, but also be aware that a big discrepancy in dates early on can mean things aren't developing as they should. I'm sorry you're going through the stress and uncertainty of this.

I’m not sure I understand. How does getting a strong positive on Tuesday mean you are only three weeks pregnant?

For the scan dates to make sense, it would mean the strong positive OP had last Tuesday would have been at 3 weeks.

Unfortunately my similar experience with such a discrepancy in dates ended in miscarriage. I shall cross everything and hope for a better outcome for you OP.

Ok, thanks, by ‘last Tuesday’ I thought she meant 2 days ago, not nine.

For 6 weeks pregnant that could be possibly a bit worrying if they couldn’t see a yolk sac or fetal pole etc. However there obviously is the possibility you ovulated a bit later and you are early. This wouldn’t account for the strong positive though. So unfortunately there’s the possibility of it being a blighted ovum.
Was the scan internal or external? External scans aren’t very reliable that early on at all. Normally by 7 weeks you get a much clearer picture. Have they rebooked you for another scan in a week or two?

yes they booked me in for 2 weeks time, they said they don’t follow dates from LMP so it could be right going by ovulation but it’s all a bit confusing and stressful

I'm surprised anywhere private is offering a scan so early, usually anywhere reputable will not scan until 8 weeks since your last period. You can only wait and go back, but unless you have bleeding, try and assume all fine. The measurements are so tiny that early on, that's why it's best to wait longer for a scan.

RNM1 · 23/01/2026 12:04

Yeh I did wonder this, as iv had early scans before and it’s always been ok, I’m wondering did I usually wait until 8 weeks? But the website says 6 weeks.

It could be right if you ovulated late yes but it would be very unusual to have such a strong positive at 7dpo. That’s where it could be concerning. The embryo doesn’t implant until 5-6dpo earliest. And then it takes a while for HCG to rise.

Obviously it’s not impossible for the pregnancy to work out. At the PP said measurements are tiny at this stage and most official clinics like EPUs and IVF places don’t like to scan before 7 weeks as it’s too small to say for definite if it’s a viable pregnancy. But I would say be hopeful but be a bit prepared it might not be viable.

Hey did you manage to have your second scan? I’m having similar discrepancies with dates

RNM1 · 08/02/2026 21:54

Yes I had a scan last week which was two weeks after the original scan and I was measuring 6 weeks and two days which going by my LMP was behind but they said if I ovulated late this was normal, they give a two week window as long as the baby is measuring around that, they were able to see the heartbeat etc. Iv been having brown spotting since then though but hoping everything is ok! The wait is difficult, do you know if you ovulate late?

My dates are all messed up with the scans.
lmp was 8/12
had a lot of positive early response tests on the 29/12
we went an early reassurance scan on the 25/1 and fetal pole measure 5w1d but I should have been 6w6d.
had a scan at epu 30/1 fetal pole measured 3.5mm said late 5w possible 6 w, no heartbeat yet.
my next scan is Friday. The wait is actually killing me.
mom going from trying to be positive to losing hope, it’s like a rollercoaster

Hi, just wanted to check in to see how your scan went? Unfortunately I ended up having a misscarrige at 8/9 weeks
