First baby small for gestational age - extra monitoring in second pregnancy?

First child was born on 2nd centile, 6lb 1oz at 40+6 (difficult birth but otherwise healthy). It was unexpected- I had 2 growth scans in pregnancy (one as fundal measurement was high and second as it had reduced), both scans put baby on 50th centile.
I am now 7 weeks pregnant with my second. Is there anyone else who’s had a baby who was SGA who can tell me if they had any additional care during their second pregnancy? (Scans etc). Obviously I will discuss this with midwife during booking appointment (unable to book it until I’ve reached 8 weeks), but just wanted to ask here to see what others experiences are.
Thanks

My SIL did because her first was small for no apparent reason. Second was incidentally fine.

Hi, I was induced with my first because they thought she stopped growing and she was 5lb 13oz. I was then given extra growth scans with my second who was born at 39+6 weighing 8lbs 15.5oz 🙈 it was nice they kept an eye on my second pregnancy but there wasnt a need in the end! Congratulations and good luck with yours 😊

Both of mine were 6lbers, it runs in families, I had 2 vessel cords. My siblings and I were all 6lbers. My scans hadn’t indicated small for age and I was told 6lb is within normal range just

Mine was 6lb12 at 41+1, so I was given extra scans from around 28 weeks I think for my 2nd, he also measured small so I was having a scan every 2 weeks, one week to check the placenta and the next scan to check the growth.. I ended up being induced at 38+3, he came at 38+5 and weighed 6lb4.

I am pregnant with my 3rd now and they have given me aspirin to take daily and I've been given extra scans at 32 and 36 weeks but he seems to be measuring as he should so far at 34 weeks!

My first was born on 6th centile. For my second I had extra scans from 28 weeks (growth scan every four weeks and dopplers every four weeks). I was also prescribed aspirin to take throughout. The protocol at my hospital was to recommend aspirin if a previous baby had been below 8th centile. My second was born 0.4th centile but with no clear reason!

(Both totally healthy and I was also a 6lb baby so as someone else said, runs in families!)

My baby was bang on 6 pounds at 41 weeks. Nothing was mentioned about them being considered SGA and nothing has been mentioned now that I'm pregnant again so I'd assume no extra monitoring, unless there was a health issue or obvious cause.

DD1 was 5lb 12oz at 38w so classed as SGA. I had an issue with my uterine artery dopplers during pregnancy and then high BP on day of labour. She was very poorly after birth (unrelated to size). For my second, I had an extra growth scan at 28w (everyone in our trust has a 36w scan as standard) but that was it (until 36w when we discovered DD2 was breech and that i also had preeclampsia, so there was much monitoring after that!). I'm unsure if the 28w scan was due to the SGA or the other issues. DD2 was 6lbs 3oz at 39+3 so broadly similar really.

My first baby was born 2nd centile (total surprise to us all as all my measurements were normal throughout!) and in my second pregnancy I had growth scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks. Was returned to community midwife care after the 36 weeks scan as baby was 12th centile on the scan. Born 38 weeks, still small but perfectly healthy and bigger than my first (who also was perfectly healthy incidentally!). Neither my husband or I are particularly tall so the consultant concluded that my babies were just the right size for me. I was a 6lb overdue baby myself so I think a lot is genetics (obviously in some cases there is a genuine problem with the placenta but not always). I was never put on aspirin.

DD1 was exactly the same size as your first.

I was told I’d have more monitoring for my second… but it never really happened. I had to keep pushing very hard for it, and I was given it grudgingly (the actual treatment was brilliant, just the admin to get there was a ballache).

Good thing too as DD2 was bigger, but had other issues that were picked up by the extra monitoring.

So my advice is to work out what you should be having, then don’t be fobbed off if you don’t actually get it.

As with others experiences my first was 5th percentile. I was given aspirin and growth scans automatically every three weeks from 28 weeks. This one hasn’t been born yet but is also measuring small (5-20th percentile) depending on scan. Maybe I just make small babies!

Chica1990 · 24/01/2026 19:52

My first was born at 38+1 weighing 5lb 11 which put him at 4th centile and I did then get growth scans and consultant appointments second time round. Quite lucky as one of those growth scans (32 weeks) showed soft markers of gestation diabetes after I had tested negative at 35 weeks, so moved consultants for this instead after.

waitandwonder · 24/01/2026 20:11

Yes, I had growth scans with second and third pregnancies. First was 6lb 3 at 40 weeks, second was 7lb8 at 38 weeks..! Third was small - the third growth scan showed no change in size since the previous scan so she was induced at nearly 40 weeks. She was 6lb. All were fine, third is still tiny at age 3!
