Second baby. Stomach and weight huge compared to first

I am 21 weeks with my second and my belly is the size it was when I was 38 weeks with my first. My weight is higher than when I gave birth last time! I have always been thin and between 49-53kg my entire adult life. I am now 58kg and rising! I obviously can’t work out or do any of the self care stuff like with my first as I have another child to look after and severe nausea which is affecting what I can eat and what exercise I can do. I am getting really worried that either I have some sort of diabetes or that I’ve finally hit the point I become out of shape the rest of my life. Is this a normal experience? I’ve always been very body conscious and this is really disturbing me.

Honestly I wouldn't worry. I'm like you petite and usually 52 kg pre pregnancy, last time I checked at 25 weeks I was 70 kg!!! 😱 This is my 4th and like you say I've been bigger than full term with my others for a while now!! I had a growth scan yesterday at 32 weeks and baby is measuring very big (5lbs 8oz already!) so I'm just trying to let it be for now and worry about the weight afterwards 😬

BudgetBuster · 15/01/2026 21:01

Oh I could have wrote this.
I'm currently 18 weeks with 2nd (6th pregnancy). I am absolutely huge! My 8/9 month maternity clothes from last pregnancy don't fit.

Morecoffeethanks · 15/01/2026 21:04

I was very petite pre pregnancy- 44kg (I’m short) and put on a lot with my second baby. I had very low blood pressure and for some crazy reason thought eating sugar would give me energy- it didn’t!
The weight has come off again but this time it wasn’t until after I stopped breastfeeding. I think just go with it for the pregnancy and once the baby is sleeping okay and you have some energy work on it.

I could have written this post too! Also 21weeks with number 2 and although I was small in this pregnancy to start with, I feel like I’ve ballooned over the last 2 weeks. It’s not a great feeling I agree, especially as like you I had a small bump and small weight gain during my first pregnancy and was able to go to the gym regularly until about 35 weeks.

Now I have less time for exercise other than chasing a toddler and am very anxious at how big I will get towards the end of pregnancy. I’d gained 3/4kg last time by the half way point but I’m already up 6kg this time at look 30 weeks pregnant compared to my last bump.

The weight fell off rapidly when I was breastfeeding last time, so I’m really hoping the same will happen this time. I’ve also heard from friends that they grew faster the second time around but they were the same size at the end, so fingers crossed.

I think it's relatively normal, but I know that doesn't make it any easier or less uncomfortable.

I'm 34 weeks with DC2 now and also much, much bigger than with my first. With my first pregnancy people were always shocked to hear how far along I was. Now everyone is shocked to hear baby is only due end of Feb and not, like, tomorrow. I am also so uncomfortable that it has been a struggle to be active, so that doesn't help.

I'm trying not to be too phased by it. Once baby is here and I am recovered I can deal with it again.

Good luck! Hope you'll have a healthy and not too-uncomfortable pregnancy.

I could’ve wrote this. I’ve probably put on a stone, if not more. However I’m eating loads and was quite low to start with (8 stone 4 now 9 stone 4). I tried my jeans on Friday night and they don’t fit at all and I nearly had a meltdown… all very normal I’m sure but it’s a horrible feeling!! However I’m eating so much - what did I expect to happen?! Only 18 weeks!

Eestar · 18/01/2026 08:30

I think it's quite normal for 2nd pregnancy to be different and I was a bit freaked out too at how much more I gained compared to the first time. I was, however, vomiting a bit less compared to first time around, and also developed a REAL chocolate habit!

I continued to carry a couple of kg extra after pregnancy (would be usually about 51kg but was more like 55kg after baby no.2) - when baby was about a year old I decided to do something about it and a few weeks of a 'reset' with a personal trainer sorted it.

First time around, by comparison, I was back to pre pregnancy size after a few weeks.

Thankfully I'm back to normal now (my lower abdomen sticks out a bit more no matter what, even at a lower than ore pregnancy weight...) but it did take a little more conscious effort second time around, rather than happening on it's own.

Bit late with the comment but I am 20 weeks now and searching exactly for this! I could have written this post myself.. so much bigger than the first time and the fast weight gain worries me to the point I can'teven bring myself to step on the scales (I was weighing myself pretty much every week with my first!)! I too am pettite and normally between 49 - 52kg and very conscious of myself. (Staying healthy and exercising which with this pregnancy is not really possible as much with another kid and feeling nauseous).
How are you feeling now a couple of months later? Is the weight gain more steady?

I'm not the original poster but I did comment on this thread with the same issue. I was 18w then and literally thought I was huge. I'm over 26w now and I've rounded off a bit but haven't got much bigger. I think my muscles just stretched much earlier but I haven't gotten as big as I thought I was going to get.

namezchangez · 16/03/2026 22:06

I think this is normal! I was 59kg when I got pregnant with no 2 (I’m 175cm, so fairly thin) and 76kg when he was born. Didn’t get over 70kg with DC1. The weight loss was slightly slower after the birth but I was back to 59kg within two months. Oddly I then continued to lose more weight and by the time he was one I was underweight at 55kg despite apparently eating a lot. That didn’t happen with DC1 either.
In pregnancy 2, I had gained most of the weight by 30 weeks. I think that if you don’t have a tendency to being overweight that there’s really no need to worry; just trust that your body knows what it’s doing!

I posted earlier on this thread about my massive weight gain! I started the pregnancy around 52kg and ended it at 75kg!! I was absolutely massive, I had too much fluid and baby weighed 9lbs 5oz!! She's my 4th baby and I'm only 3 weeks pp tomorrow and I can't believe how fast the weight is falling off me this time! Obviously still got a little way to go to get back to pre pregnancy weight and I haven't weighed myself yet but I'm fitting in smaller clothes than I expected to! Back to size 8-10 already. So please don't worry yourself like I did, I think a lot of my weight was water retention as I have been sweating and weeing sooo much since she was born!! x

Summersuncocktails · 18/03/2026 17:48

Ahh i am in the same boat, I am naturally quite petite but at 20w I look as big as I did at 30w for my first pregnancy, I look wider from behind, my legs are wider, my tummy is rounder and my face is so chubby sighhhhhh..I struggled to lose weight last time, and didnt lose much whilst breastfeeding for a long while. I am dreading feeling as fat and awful as I did last time as shallow as that sounds!

Firstly, congratulations on you little one! 😊
Thank you, thats reassuring.. and I am glad you're happy with how fast you're loosing your pregnancy weight! Hopefully that will be the case for me too, especially this being my second kid! Can't imagine how busy you must be with 4 🥰

Exactly the same here, doesn't help that I can't stop comparing my first pregnancy with this one.. making me feel so big! Even though bigger belly sooner was expected, I didn't expect faster weight gain! I know it is not important how much you gain, baby's health is first! But sometimes you just can't help it! Good luck with your pregnancy and let's hope we don't get too much bigger 😅
