I already have 3 boys, as my name implies my eldest is doing his A levels and just found out I am pregnant. I had a bit of an oops moment with partner and took Ellaone but clearly that didn't work. I am at the very early stages but what would you do. Note that my other kids are with ex-H and would love to have a child with my now partner. But obviously age and past preeclampsia means I am very worried. I know it's a personal question, but what would you do if you were in my shoes?

Hey, no advice but I'm in exactly same position. 3 teens, pregnant at 44. Bit of a shocker! I'm just seeing how the weeks go 😁

Nibletmum · 26/12/2025 21:28

My 15 month old is currently running around being extremely cheeky trying to pull the baubles off the tree. Drives me bonkers but I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Unexpected surprise baby at age 42. Have 3 others and she's completed us x

Beyondbeliefsometimes · 26/12/2025 21:36

Hey welcome to my club too, currently 22 weeks aged 41 with a wee late surprise. Took a while to adjust but am now very excited. I got NIPT at 10 weeks and that helped settle me a little and 20 week anomaly scan helped a little more. I work in this field though and only see the times it goes wrong, so will be anxious until they are about 18 lol

No one can help advise you though, you have to do what is right for you and your family. Only you will know what that is.

Alevelprep26 · 26/12/2025 22:21

Thank you all for the reply! It's very early days here but these stories are v encouraging. I am assuming the prenatal care was more regular?

Can I please ask if you had NIPT privately or through the NHS?

curliegirlie · 27/12/2025 11:07

If you want the NIPT regardless of combined test results you’ll probably have to go privately, as in general they only offer it through the NHS if you get a high chance result in the combined test. I’d recommend doing it privately though, as the CT is basically based on proxy variables (nuchal translucency, age, PAPP A, and HCG level) and so is not as accurate as the NIPT - which, although also not diagnostic (and so will also give high/low chance) is a huge amount more accurate than the combined test, and so could mean you avoid being sent into a tailspin if the combined test gets a high chance result on the basis of your age, and then you have a week or two to wait and see what the NIPT comes up with.

It is all a bit random though. With my eldest (when I was 32) my CT result was 1 in 1,900 (and she did turn out to have DS - postnatally diagnosed), and so knowing that a child with a trisomy automatically increases baseline chance to something like 1 in 100, I asked to go straight to the NIPT with my second and third, which they allowed. But this time round, because I was 42, they still wanted me to do the combined test (after I’d already had the NIPT and low chance results) as they wanted to have the PAPP-A score. So I had the bloods, fully expecting the chance to be in double digits due to the combination of my past history and age, and it came out as something like 1 in 2,400! The baby’s NT was 1.9 (so well within the normal range) and I can only assume my HCG and PAPP-A levels must have been brilliant to counteract my age (nearly 43 at the time) and my daughter!

onescooppeace · 27/12/2025 11:49

nothing, I am 41 and pregnant with my 5th. Take the best PVs athat's it. At this age you may have nutrients deficiencies for what I would like to suggest you Prenatal vitamins with DHa. the best PVs I have ever got. consist all natural nutrients, easy to swallow no side effects

Elmspringwater · 27/12/2025 11:52

Congratulations op.

My honest opinion is i couldn't do it.

BurningBenches · 27/12/2025 12:44

I had my 5th about a month short of my 42nd birthday. My older ones were 21, 11, 10 and nearly 2. She’s now 4.

It was the tail end of Covid, but I had no extra/better care than with any of the others, just the standard nhs set for mums having second plus (so fewer appointments than a ftm) I do think my NHS trust was a bit too relaxed tbh.

I did have to have blood thinners I think from 28wks til 6wks pp with 4 and 5 I was older, obese and had more than 3. And aspirin early on.

I was offered induction between 40-41wks due to age and due to the demand ended up being offered 41wks exactly - so really no concern/consideration for being over 40 as I think a lot of trusts induce before 40wks.

She was probably my trickiest pregnancy as I had a huge bleed at 12wks caused by a subchrionic haematoma. And it was in lockdowns/homeschooling/had a baby already. My 4th at 39/40 was actually my best pregnancy in terms of health and wellbeing.

Her birth was fine, she came out in 2hrs. I recovered quickly/well.

Now she’s 4 she’s a much adored sibling with a huge personality. We wouldn’t be without her and she is great company for her 6yo brother. I’m super lucky that they all get on well, much better than my sibling and I did.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. Very helpful. I have googled this last night and there are quite few clinics that does that near where I live. Definitely worth the expense

If it helps, I had a super easy pregnancy and delivery (c section) at 41.

FancyCatSlave · 27/12/2025 14:23

I had my only child at 41, all very uncomplicated apart from mild GD (easily diet controlled, small baby) and that isn’t age related, just one of those things. Straightforward vaginal birth and I felt absolutely fabulous when pregnant.

I did have private NIPT though, the combined screening automatically gives poor odds if you are over 40. I was 1/10000 with NIPT and you find out sex. Worth the £400.

I was automatically consultant led but that was all, and not able to go overdue as there’s a higher risk of placenta failing. We also had to stay in for 24hrs as is standard with GD as they need to monitor baby’s sugars. But none of the staff remarked on my age and in my area most of the parents are 35+ so I didn’t stand out.

curliegirlie · 27/12/2025 17:32

@FancyCatSlavedid you manage to go a bit early then and dodge induction? I’ve also been told I’ll be booked in for induction at 39+5, so I’m fervently hoping I’ll get going naturally before that… DD2 was born at 39+4 or 5 I think, so there is is hope, but I’m 35 weeks now so feeling a bit twitchy about it!

God, I’m absolutely exhausted today. Had a snooze earlier this afternoon and really tempted to go back to bed again…

Cat1504 · 27/12/2025 17:38

I don’t think I could go ahead….you will be 60 by the time they are 18….I’m 60 with my eldest GC age 10 ….at 50 my life was my own again ….3 kids all flown….but don’t be hasty….think it through

I’m just trying to work out how many years you’ve been ironing school uniform 🤔

noroomonbroom10 · 27/12/2025 17:49

Had my 6th daughter just before my 42nd birthday.Problem free pregnancy.
Cleared for a home birth.
Induction wasn’t even mentioned and she was born at 41+2 (2hr labour and arrived at the hospital 17 minutes before she was born)
We were home 8 hours after ( would have been home sooner but stopped in Tesco on the way home to pick up something nice for dinner)
Older children absolutely besotted with her.
Eldest like you to take their A-levels in 2026.

noroomonbroom10 · 27/12/2025 17:53

Only reason we went to the natural birthing unit rather than staying at home was my midwife was at another delievery and wouldn’t have made it in time.

cityanalyst678 · 27/12/2025 17:58

My ex boss has just had a baby at 47. She looks amazing and is loving every minute. You will be a fabulous Mum, much more relaxed and take everything in your stride….

Not quite, they attempted induction a couple
of days after my due date (should’ve been on due date but they were full). Induction failed (couldn’t get the balloon in and then I had a reaction to the pessary so they had to take it out after 30 mins). That’s unusual though I gather! It basically gave me immediate insane continuous contractions which is bad for the baby-uterine hyper stimulation. After they took it out they gave me something to calm everything down.

I had to stay in to be monitored and wait for the consultant, probably for a section the midwife thought. But whilst waiting as they were busy (September!) I marched the corridors and stairs and went in to spontaneous labour and she was born within 6 hours-couldn’t have my epidural as came too fast. I suspect all the poking about set it off but I don’t recommend that as a strategy!

That all sounds a bit dramatic but I basically went for a bath at 2cm dilated and got out an hour later at 8cm. Insisted they should check me as I felt something wasn’t right and before I knew it we were pushing with me still asking for the epidural 😂.

MumChp · 27/12/2025 22:05

My 3rd is 12 yo. I was older than you expecting. Our oldest two are from 1997 and 2001. 3rd wasn't planner but a blessing.
What does your husband think?

curious79 · 27/12/2025 22:15

I miscarried at your age now and honestly felt like I had dodged a bullet. I especially feel like that now, nearly 10 years on.
But you need to do what you feel is right

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 27/12/2025 22:24

You have to follow your heart.
Personally I wouldn’t want to be pregnant now at 41 - money being a key consideration as well as tiredness and impact on my two children. It would be difficult though, because DH would be over the moon.

Similar situation, but I'm 43. My new partner has no biological children and is an excellent stepdad. We wish we were younger and its a lot to take on, but if this baby is healthy we will have it, the other option would be over our heads for the rest of out lives.
We were in the same situation a couple of years ago and freaked out about it. Considered abortion, but then I lost it a week later. Devastated us. Suddenly everything I worried about seemed trivial.
Its a very personal decision, whatever you want to do is the right thing to do.
