Anyone had/got chloasma ("mask of pregnancy ")?

I think I have, I look like I have a black eye, or like I've smudged mascara down my face days ago and left it there.

It's a bit depressing, and I didn't have it the first time I was pregnant! Will it go away?

Ive got it, a patch right in the middle of my forehead and slowly creeping down my nose

I have spoke to loads of people who have had it during pg and it goes shortly after! I hope so!!!!

TigerFeet · 11/06/2008 13:24

I had it - it is a lot better since dd's birth but nearly 4 years later I still have a couple of discoloured patches - one on my right cheek about the size of a 5p piece and my top lip is a bit darker than the rest of my face.

I understand most people completely lose it after the birth but some don't... sorry, you probably didn't want to hear that did you? It is hardly noticable, no-one has ever commented on it but I am aware of it iyswim.

i look like i have a little mustache, it is not hair that is coloured jsut my skin. i remember having it last time and on some photots after it was still there! it did go but the one i have now i paint it in touche eclat!

MegSophandEmma · 11/06/2008 13:29

Hmmm.... Last time I was pregnant, I had no problems whatsoever, I would actually say I really enjoyed it. This time however, name any pregnancy related niggle and I've had/got it.

I had it with my first pregnancy. It was a butterfly shape. Not hugely noticable and went away.
(hi Bethoo!)

I too had the top lip thing. Made me look a bit like Hitler. I was extremely self conscious about it and did the touche eclat thing. My sister told me honestly she could see it a little but it wasn't hugely noticeable unless you knew it was there.

It's better now but still feel a bit anxious in case it happens again (am 14w now with no 3).

Factor 50 and a big hat for you now I'm afraid.

whomovedmychocolate · 11/06/2008 13:39

I have a few small patches - it's really improved by wearing sunblock but it's not much help to tell you that in retrospect. It did go last time, I think it took a few months.

snotbuster · 11/06/2008 13:49

I had a very obvious mask last summer - across my forehead and around mouth. Have got quite brown this year already and it's not there - hurrah! (DS is 2.6 now)

TigerFeet · 11/06/2008 14:26

I shied away from using the word "moustache" but yes I now admit I look like I have one too.

Does Touche Eclat really work then?

Kezza7779 · 11/06/2008 15:27

got it..... had it b4 pregnancy too now its worse!
aww well i have to say im not that bothered, im just glad dd is almost here!xxxxxxx

PollyParanoia · 11/06/2008 19:47

I got it very noticeably across nose and cheeks with first pg and went on holiday to Argentina where everyone told me I was expecting a boy because of it (in UK everyone said girl because I was so bloody fat and unbumpy). I did have a boy. Second pg I didn't have it and I had girl. Third pg I thought I bet I'm having a girl as didn't have it either despite getting brown on holiday. Sure enough scan says girl...
Obv could all be yet more old wives tales bollocks but at least has international flavour.

hoppybird · 12/06/2008 14:32

I didn't have it with my ds, but I did with my dd. My discolouration was a freckle-coloured 5cm diameter splodge in the centre of my forehead, plus marks around my eyes like large glasses. I never go in the sun to tan, usually wear high factor sunscreen, hat and sunglasses, when it's sunny, but I know that on one day that I was without a hat when pg, the marks got more pronounced. Unfortunately, although the marks have faded, I can still see them, and my dd is 21 months old now. I am still bf, so maybe they might disappear when I stop? [hopeful emoticon].

4andnotout · 12/06/2008 14:39

I have a dark brown triangle patch in between my eyebrows Just got back from spain so it is now very pronounced I have had it in the other 3 pregnancies as well.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 12/06/2008 21:14

I get it. Mine starts as huge looking freckles around my eyes and nose - it's started already at 19-20 weeks and then it just forms a mask in the pattern of one of those flight sleep masks. Goes away a fairly quickly after birth (few months). I am quite prone to freckles anyway.

moodlumthehoodlum · 12/06/2008 21:21

I had this, and bad news girls, ds is THREE in a few weeks and I still have it.

This is despite throwing money at the problem, having a course of laser treatment, a course of those really thorough facials and buying very expensive decleor cream to fade dark patches.

Mine is over my top lip (and although everyone else says they can't see it - I CAN )

bohemianbint · 13/06/2008 13:07

Oh buggery. Might have to resign myself to a life with what looks like a permanent mascara streak down my face.

This pregnancy is so different, I keep wondering if am getting a girl this time. (although am guessing it's each pregnancy that's different and nothing to do with the sex?)

Yes, I had it both times and mine has never really faded properly. Mine was my freckles that went mad across my forehead and then around my jaw line and around my mouth. Even now (and youngest DS is nearly 3) as soon as I go in the sun it reappears!

Pollyanna · 13/06/2008 13:16

I have one on each cheekbone. ds2 is 9 weeks now and they are still there. they look horrible.

A word of warning -I had this with both DS & DD and it went away after they were born, but now I'm 51 and approaching, if not actually arrived at, the menopause it's back - looks like permanently.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 13/06/2008 16:21

bohemian- I have one of each and the mask appeared with both.
