Hi All,

Ive just had an early scan. My last period date puts me at 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant but I’ve just found out I’m carrying identical twins (one sac). But one twins heartbeat is a lot slower than the other one and they are only small. 3.1mm and 3.5mm, measuring at only about 6 weeks and a day.

The sonographer basically explained not to get our hopes up and to be cautious and we will scan again in a week or so.

Im just wondering if there’s others who have been in this situation and how it ended up?

If the smaller baby doesn’t make it, is there a chance the stronger baby will survive or will they both pass as they share the same gestational sac?

My twins (now 18m) were smaller throughout pregnancy. On the first scan (5+6) we only saw one heartbeat! At birth they were 4lb 12oz and 6lb 1oz, so still a gulf between them. That said, the heartbeats were very similar throughout pregnancy. Mine were DiDi though so I’m not sure if that’s different.

I believe if you do lose one twin, the remaining twin can still make it.

good luck xx

They’re very cautious when they realise you’re having twins. When mine were found on my first scan I was immediately placed under the most senior consultant who sat me down and gave me a long speech detailing everything that could go wrong and how much more difficult multiple pregnancies were ( they were fine in the end ). I think until you experience a multiple pregnancy it’s not something that occurs to you.

Thank you for the reassuring words! Yes it’s so unexpected and a shock, and then filled with sort of negativity, it’s hard to see past that at the moment. Fingers crossed for a positive scan next week!
