chinchi · 10/06/2008 10:06

Im having the biggest craving for Irn-Bru, and drinking roughly a 2 litre bottle everyday

DH seems to think its harmful, but Im not so sure. Does anybody have any ideas?!

I would think maybe the amount of sugar/caffine wouldn't be the best thing in the world for you but I understand the urge

everything in moderation - could you try replacing a glass with a glass of water when you have a craving and see if that curbs it slightly?

finallypregnant · 10/06/2008 10:19

The information I have read is that you need to cut back on fizzy drinks but as the above poster said, everything in moderation!

I only ever drink Irn Bru with a hangover, not that I have had one of those in a long long time!

PetitFilou1 · 10/06/2008 10:38

I think you should go easy on it - it won't be doing your teeth much good (and you are already prone to problems with teeth in pregnancy hence the free dental care) and it will be throwing your sugar levels right out of whack. On the other hand it won't kill you (waves to dizzy)

PetitFilou1 · 10/06/2008 10:39

Just thought it will also probably be making you put on unneeded weight! Sorry - probably not what you wanted to hear...

dizzydixies · 10/06/2008 10:40

I think maybe try cutting back rather than stopping - caffine and sugar withdrawal from 2 litres a day can't be that pleasant even when not pregnant

prettybird · 10/06/2008 10:53

I had just started drinking "full fat" Irn Bru without feeling guilty (Diet Irn Bru is the one diet drink that just deosn't cut it ) when my docotr told me I had "leaky kidneys" - sugar in my urine twice but no problems with my blood - so I should cut down on unecessary sugar

However, I decided that Magnum icecreams didn't count as "sugar"

dizzydixies · 10/06/2008 10:55

prettybird magnum whites are a medical necessity for heart burn - carry on with my expert blessing

irn-bru diet is NOT a proper drink and should not even be acknowledged frankly !!

singyswife · 10/06/2008 10:55

Hi, I HATED irn bru (and I am a red headed scots girl) until I was pg with dd1, then I had an overwhelming craving for it. I drank a 2 litre bottle every day and suffered no ill effects to either me or my dd. I was aneamic while pg with dd1 even with the irn bru. Didnt do me any harm. Tell dh to sod off.

bethoo · 10/06/2008 10:56

my last pregnancy i was drinking hte same quantity of full fat coke! which may have caused my gestational diabetes but otherwise my ds was fine.

oopsadaisyangel · 10/06/2008 11:01

Having the exact same craving (sits with Irn-bru bottle in hand) but trying to stick about a litre a day just now! Its really helping my morning sickness so I'm sticking with it!

dizzydixies · 10/06/2008 11:04

lucozade was my morning sickness staple and when I stressed to mw I was worried about sugar intake etc she told me to keep down anything I could at that point!

am now going to hide this thread before I high tail it to tesco for some ginger

EricL · 10/06/2008 11:06

Yeah - i would say it would the amount of caffeine you would be consuming would be the major worry.

Isn't caffeine a diaretic anyway?

I thought increasing the amount of times you want to pee would be depressing enough during a pregnancy.

Anyway - clicked on this topic as i moved up to Scotland a while ago and was dumbstruck at the amount of space given to Irn-Bru on the shelf in the shop i moved to.

I instantly questioned the sanity of filling up a hole in the shelf with such an absucre product that had OBVIOUSLY been over-ordered.

I was astounded to be informed that it was actually the permanent footage of the product and that it sold more than Coke.

i tried it myself and it tasted like liquid bubblegum. Truly horrendous.

Some of the local population even drink it as a mixer with their vodka. You can seee the evidence of this in the day-glo puddles of vomit spread around the city centre at the weekend.

YUK..............

EricL · 10/06/2008 11:07

(Mind you - it is probably less harmful than the six-pack of cream eggs, pack of jaffa cakes and serving of fried noodles my DW was on during her first pregnancy......)

prettybird · 10/06/2008 11:09

Dizzydixies - this was 8 years ago! (ds will be 8 in Spetember). I am back on the diet Irn Bru with no excuse to "upgrade" . Although as a diet drink, I prefer Sainsbury's diet gingerbeer.

..... but I do sometimes steal a swig of dh's Irn Bru!

Don't like the white chocolate on Magnum white's anyway - for me it si magnum Dlassics or the ones covered in plain chocolate (wahtever they're called) or nothing!

prettybird · 10/06/2008 11:12

EricL - Scotland is apparently the only country in the world where Coke isn't the top selling drink at Macdonalds!

Morrisons also came acorss this problem when they took over Safeway: under-ordered the Irn Bru and lost loads of customers! Personally - they lost me forever as a customer (not just the Irn Bru - they cut back the range of other things too )

dizzydixies · 10/06/2008 11:14

eric tread very carefully here - tis our national drink only superseeded by whisky

and frankly in defence of your wife, jaffa cakes and cream eggs are genuine pregnancy cravings and I hope you gladly brought her them from the 24hr garage on demand

prettybird you carry on with your weirdy dislike of magnum whites - means all the more to help with my heartburn

MrsMacaroon · 10/06/2008 15:10

this makes me feel better...i kept my Dr Pepper and Red Kola cravings under wraps in fear of snobbery. Now baby has arrived i have one chilled glass of Irn Bru every evening as I settle down for a breastfeed/Big Brother session...ahhhhhhh bliss (sad eh)

sweetkitty · 10/06/2008 15:15

Irn-Bru gives me horrendous heartburn right now it's like drinking battery acid (then again most things taste of battery acid.

Carazan · 10/06/2008 17:23

Irn Bru is the closest thing I have to alcohol! 21 and preggers doesn't leave much of a social life so it is the ideal substitute when sitting with a bunch of care free drunkards in the pub, plus its on tap and orange therefore could almost be mistaken for a pint of scrumpy jack! I was a die hard Fat Fighter before i fell preggers so a REAL sugar rush like Irn Bru is, like they say... Phenomenal!!!

dizzydixies · 10/06/2008 18:07

carazan may I suggest and occassional lemon fanta, with your eyes closed and the sun shining it can taste just like a smirnoff ice

chinchi · 10/06/2008 18:10

Thanks for the great and funny replies!

Ive tried cutting down today (tried being the operative word!)

It was the caffeine content DH was worried about, so I think I should have more control over myself and drink in moderation!

MrsMacaroon, Im sharing your excitement about sitting down with a chilled glass of Irn-Bru!

OP posts:
MrsMacaroon · 10/06/2008 19:13

if you get down to the one (big) glass per day it's a real moment. Lie back and enjoy those additive and colourings...

dizzydixies · 10/06/2008 19:57

MrsMacaroon its all organic and natural you know and I won't won't won't believe otherwise

My2Weegirls · 10/06/2008 19:59

oh - i had mega cravings for irn-bru too when pregnant with both of mine! the vending machine at work never did so much business

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 20:01
