IME, they measure the baby's head/limb/stomach etc via a scan.

They then plot it on a graph, much the same as the growth after birth charts.

Thing is they are only accurate if there are a good number of results, i.e. quite a few scans, if your baby is a standard rate of growth, i.e. follows a centile continuously and if you have the exact dates for conception.
With DS2 I had an almost exact guess for his weight but my LMP and Scan both showed the same time of conception, which matched with when we had had sex, so my graph was plotted accurately, but there is no way to be sure with every pregnancy, also DS2 followed a standard centile, and I had scans every 2 weeks.

I think the weight/size scans are notoriously inaccurate. I had one at 36 weeks and she said my baby was big and she then followed it with some mutterings of possibility of gestationl diabetes, which I most certainly do not have. DS was bang on average.

I've heard lot's of stories of scan estimates that turned out to be pretty far off.

hi i have just had a growth scan done as my baby has been classed small they never told me how much she weighed tho!!

maybe ask for a growth scan

dont know how it works where ya live im in new zealand

is there a reason you're worried about the weight? I get growth scans because I have big babies and the sonographer has dutifully informed me that they are practicaly useless as they cannot give the size to any degree of accuracy in the latter stages of pregnancy

charming eh?!?

MW checked my bump and said last time I was bang on for dates and she would be 7-8lb. OB did a scan and estimated 6lb 10 - she was 6lb 9.5oz. So not inaccurate in my case.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 10/06/2008 16:44

Can I ask what mw class as a big baby. My dd was 91b 3oz.
Through antenatal app MW used to feel and say 'ooh thats a good size lass'

When I said do you mean big she quickly said 'oh no just thats its growing well'

When I saw her afterward she said she knew was gonna be big but didnt want to scare me.
Currently 28 weeks and wondered what the odds of having another big baby are. (High so ive heard)

dito i had growth scans every two weeks and were pretty accurate. picked up when ds stopped growing too, probably due to meconium at 40 weeks. sonographer suggested i go and buy him a school uniform... he was born 9 1/2 but didnt gain from 38 weeks! so should have been a monster..

dizzydixies · 11/06/2008 15:30

I think the problem is that when they reach a certain size they're too big to measure etc

well that was what she implied to me but mine were whoppers

dd1 was 10lb4 and 51cm long
dd2 was 11lb1 and 59cm long

not sure what to expect this time, 9lber would be lovely!
