Too early to tell or a misscarriage?

Hi all,

First time I have ever posted to a forum but I was wondering if anyone else has had the similar experiences and what the outcome was.

I am 42 and pregnant with my first (only been married a year). I am super grateful as I never thought I would meet anyone at this late stage in life, let alone have the possible privilege to be a mum.

I tested positive on 5th November. Took 3 tests to make sure and another 5 days later. Counting from the first day of my last period I am 8 weeks. However, I started to spot on Saturday. This has been daily, varying from a little when I wipe to a lot. Not enough to fill a pad. The colour has been from light pink, to bright red fresh blood to brown sludge. Yesterday I had a number of clots. Nothing huge and not much spotting after it until this morning again. I haven't had any pain but either do I have any typical pregnancy symptoms, other than sore boobs. I did read some research that said women over 40 are less likely to have morning sickness however.

I also had an early scan yesterday. We saw the sac and the yoke but nothing else could be found. So I have either started with an early miscarriage or I could have ovulated late and be a lot early on than thought. We have a scan booked for another 2 weeks. Wanted to wait this long so we could have a definite answer.

My question really is (sorry for the pre ramble) has anyone else experienced bleeding early on, say between 5-7 weeks, and what was the outcome? I suspect it is an early miscarriage but I do find hearing other women's stories helpful.

Thanks :)

Its such an anxious time in those first few months! It could be that you ovulated late and your not as far on as you think - are your periods regular usually?

Thanks for the response. Yeah, pretty much 28 days. I have had a few late months earlier in the year. I think I may have had an egg fertilised but not attach. But generally speaking I am really regular

So when was the 1st day of your last period?

If you tested positive on 5th November then at the very earliest you would have been 3 weeks at that point. So at minimum you’d be 7+ weeks by now, you can’t be earlier than that. I’m sorry but it does sound like a miscarriage if no baby was seen at the scan at 7+ weeks, but then again you do hear of stories all the time .

7th of October. I was due my next period 3rd November. If I count 14 days from the 7th and 14 days back from the 3rd that would bring me to 6 weeks. I guess I could have ovulated late. I really want a HCG blood test as that would show straight away the range and would tell me if the pregnancy has been successful or not but it seem so hard to get one of those!

yes, I think I have too. I know I am not over 7 weeks, but I do wonder if I ovulated later in my ovulation window. Guess time will tell

As the previous poster said, going by positive pregnancy test date you can’t be anything under 7 weeks. It doesn’t really matter how late you ovulated if your pregnancy test was positive on 5th November it is impossible for you to be under 7 weeks now. You have to be over 7 weeks. That’s accounting for you testing positive at 7dpo which is actually very rare. Most people don’t test positive until more like 9-10dpo. Which means are probably more like 7-8 weeks. So while no one can say for definite, with those dates you would very much expect to see a heartbeat.
