Low iron

I was at the midwife today and she asked if I was still taking iron tablets. I was like “huh”. She said oh your levels were borderline. She’s referring to my haemoglobin levels. They were 105. Tested again today and they’re 101. When did people need to take iron tablets?

How many weeks are you? I was put on iron tablets around 30ish weeks and at 34 weeks the level had dropped again to just below 100 so my consultant referred me to have an iron infusion which I had at 35 weeks. I was due to be induced at 37 weeks though but ended up having a section at 36 weeks with major haemorrhage, had a blood transfusion and was just prescribed another course of iron tablets. I’d just take the tablets and see how you go, if the levels aren’t increasing enough or are still dropping and you’re close to giving birth they’ll probably refer you for an infusion too x

I was told to take iron tablets at 28 weeks. Because my level of heamaglobin was 113 it should be more than 115. Iv been taking it religiously for 2.5 weeks so far but can't say I noticed any change in myself 😕 the main reason I'm taking it is because it says online it will increase your energy levels? Still feel exhausted though. If there's no change to my iron levels at the 32 week blood test I will stop them i think becuase what's the point.

I’m 31 weeks! Ok thanks for this.

@vvm I’m sorry that sounds really stressful. Was the section scheduled because of your low iron?

@Blessedandthankful this is interesting as I was told anything 105 and above in 3rd trimester is normal. Interesting.

tbh I don’t have any symptoms of low iron which is good other than tiredness but would be tired anyway.

@jmrpinkieNope I was scheduled to be induced at 37 weeks because I’m type 1 diabetic and baby had been moving less and less and from 32 weeks was not passing on the ctg monitor, Id been having 2 appointments a week from 27 weeks. I went in for my appointment at 36+1 she failed again and the consultant in triage said I could start the induction that day. I requested the section 2 days later due to a really awful experience with a midwife. She basically told me to remove my pessary myself and left the room, I couldn’t get another midwife for hours so was left by myself trying to remove it and it ended up staying in 4 hours longer than it was supposed to because I couldn’t get it out whatsoever Hmm
