17wk Scan and underdeveloped cerebellar vermis

Hi,

My partner is pregnant with our first child. Today we received some worrying news following a scan at 17wks. We have been told that our baby’s cerebellar vermis appears under developed. The exact wording on our notes is “the inferior portion of the cerebellar vermis appears underdeveloped/ Blakes pouch cyst”.

We have been referred to Fetal medicine and have another scan in 6 days for a second opinion.

We sat down with a specialist midwife after the doctor who performed the scan had laid out the medical jargon. The conversations that followed did give us some comfort but now sitting with our worry and against the midwife’s advice we have taken to google (which I don’t expect anyone to resist). If I am honest we are regretting this now, as it has set our worry into overdrive. The primary reason is that it is very difficult to find very much online where people have experienced this. Medical journals seem to be very mixed on the subject and one even caused some frustration as it suggests that 17wks would be a bit early to raise this as a developmental concern.

I think what we are looking for is:

if anyone has experienced this (particularly this early on)?

Does anyone have any positive outcomes they can share where development in this area has perhaps caught up later in pregnancy?

it would be extremely helpful if anyone who has gone through this could offer some guidance on things to be asking at our next appointment.

We would greatly appreciate any information.

So sorry to hear this Patrick. My baby had a small cerebellum and vermis at 20 week scan and had lots of fetal mri and scans to monitor their progress. In the end they caught up at 36 weeks and all turned out ok. I would recommend takinf extra brain power vitamins ans omega 3 foods I believe this helped. I hope it works out in the end.
