What did you get after deductions for stat mat leave (UK)

Hi all,

I know we're all on different tax brackets, but I'm trying to plan how much more I need to save for maternity leave and I really have no clue how much I'll get paid after tax.

I will have to pay full tax because I will get 5 months full pay which will push me over the limit, then statutory. (I will take 12 months total so I know I will get 0 for some)

Can you tell me how much you got when you were on statutory after deductions, so how much did you take home?

Kind regards,

I’m not a higher rate tax payer and got just under £700 (I earn £48k)

@BeNavyLion
What do you mean by ‘full tax’? Basic or higher?
There are calculators online to work it out for you.
I’m a higher rate tax payer and by the time I go on stat maternity (Dec) I’ll be over the higher rate so I’m planning 40% tax off my stat maternity till March then new tax year will mean I should then go to basic only as I’ll be only getting statutory maternity till Dec 2026.

If you’re getting 5 months of full pay I’d imagine you need to consider National insurance deductions as well.

I’ve just tried to save as much as I can with my left over income

You'll pay tax on the months that you're earning but you'll receive some of your tax back if you're in a higher rate band on the months you're not receiving a salary as you won't hit the higher earning threshold (I earn £87k but only earned £48k on maternity leave). I got £800 SMP before tax but also received a car allowance (do you get one of those?) which they continued to pay so I have ~£1200 pm on the months I received no SMP. I was surprised I got anything as I wasn't told I'd receive overpaid tax back automatically or my car allowance.

Your company should give you a payment schedule, although admittedly I didn't find mine helpful at all!
