Extra empty fluid sac in early pregnancy scan ?

Hi

We had our 1st early pregnancy scan at 6w+3 days and all was well with fetal pole measuring as should and saw a heartbeat. But there was also an extra fluid sac under where the pregnancy was, the sonographer didn’t seem bothered and said it will just absorb, it’s not a heamatoma, just extra fluid / an empty sac ? has anyone else had this ? Was it a twin that didn’t develop ? Will it affect the pregnancy in any way ? Thanks

I had this something similar, a gestational sac looking thing in my ovary, it was just a corpus luteum cyst that went away on its own. Maybe go to the EPU to make sure it is definitely nothing, I’m not sure private scan places know much about this kind of thing

I have similar, I’m 10 weeks pregnant and had an early scan at the EPU at 6 weeks. Seen a sac with feral pole & heartbeat and sac 2 was empty. They said it could’ve been a twin or maybe just a bleed so I went back in 2 weeks later, a second twin hadn’t appeared and it was still empty so now I’m back for another scan next week to check the sac is shrinking

If you’re worried I’d ask the NHS to scan you. I’m guessing either a sac that didn’t develop further or a cyst x

Thanks for all the replies, I had IVF so the scan was carried out by the ivf clinic , which they run NHS and private patients from so they have the same protocol etc as NHS , I have another scan booked in two weeks when I will be 8 +3 so will see then what’s happing , just wondered if anyone had the same as hoping it doesn’t hinder the pregnancy in anyway, @Samthenanny did they say what the nexts steps would be if the sac didn’t start to shrink at all if you don’t mind me asking ? Thanks

@AmberRose26 no they didn’t say, they kind of dodged the question and kept saying my body should just absorb it or I could start bleeding but nothing about if it doesn’t get smaller

AmberRose26 · 11/11/2025 21:59

@Samthenanny ah ok.. I hope it absorbs with no problems for you, I will keep you updated with mine and let you know what happens at my next scan in a couple of weeks. Best of luck 🤞🏽

@AmberRose26 I had my follow up scan yesterday and my second sac has shrunk right down, you could still see it but it was tiny.
when’s your next scan?

AmberRose26 · 19/11/2025 19:42

@Samthenanny hi, oh that’s great news ! And was baby ok I take it ? My scan is next week, I’ll keep you updated as to how it goes. My nausea has ramped up this week so I am hoping this is a good sign !

@Samthenanny just updating as I said I would. I had my scan today and there was no empty fluid sac anymore , but she did detect a hematoma ?! Whether this was the same thing and was just misdiagnosed at the 1st scan am not sure , or if the sac has gone and this has developed , it’s very strange , but yes she confirmed i definitely have a Subchronic hematoma , not sure whether to be worried or not as I am on blood thinners which may stop it clotting. Not sure what to do but I’ll call EPU tomorrow and ask ! 🫣😵‍💫
