Thought I was 6w2d...early scan shows empty gestational sac measuring smaller than they would expect

Basically what the title says. Got a positive test after 4 years ttc, 2nd cycle of letrozole.

I have had on off cramping and light spotting with a couple light bleeds since sunday.

Yesterday I had an early scan at what I thought would show me at 6w2 based on LMP but they only saw a gestational sac measuring at less than what they would expect to see. After some googling I have read that gestational sac is visible on a scan from 4.5-5weeks. They stated I could have ovulated later than I thought, but being on letrozole I doubt that highly. I have to go back in a week to have another scan.

I am absolutely heart broken and think that the cramping and on off bleeding is the start of my body rejecting the pregnancy and miscarrying.

I am trying to remain positive but I am failing at this 😭😭

I had a scan at 6 weeks 1 day going by my last LMP and they could only see the gestational sac then too. I was then booked in for another scan at 7 weeks 2 days and on that scan the placenta and embryo could be seen along with a viable heartbeat.

Try not to worry too much yet as it could just be that it is too early to see anything else yet as that is exactly what happened to me.

Also I had horrendous cramping and some light spotting which only stopped at about 8 weeks. I am now 10 weeks and 4 days.

Not exactly the same, but I had a scan when I thought I was about 7 weeks. The scan put me at 6. I had another 3 weeks later, so expected to be 9 weeks, but I was 10, so the same as what I had originally thought would be correct.
I think it can be hard to date correctly through ultrasound at that stage because they are so tiny and difficult to see.

Thank you bogh for your responses!

I am trying to stay positive but finding it very hard and thinking the worse.

My cramping has gone with the odd one here and there but still spotting on and off 😭 9 days now

I'm not surprised it's so difficult to remain positive. It's horrible at times like this when everything feels so uncertain.
Have you long to wait for your scan?

TTC2021PCOS · 12/11/2025 11:32

It's tomorrow mid-day so not too long to wait, but definitely long enough!

I am a nervous wreck! Keeping everything crossed! Hoping the cramping was little one growing and catching up
