New mattress for new baby?

Is it really necessary to get a new mattress for moses basket and cot for a new baby. Ours is one with a wipe clean surface so no dust etc could escape out.

I did for the moses basket, but didn't for the cot (washable cover and so I washed it....).

I've just been reading about this myself on the FSID website. Their advice is:

Ideally you should buy a new mattress for each new baby. If you are not able to do this, use the one you have, as long as it was made with a completely waterproof cover and has no tears, cracks or holes. Clean and dry it thoroughly. Check that the mattress is in good condition; is firm, not soft; fits the cot without any gaps; and doesn?t sag.

We have had the same mattress for two children. But to be honest ds was only in cot for eighteen months as went into bed really quickly (a climber)So dd just used that one.
