Baby engagement confusion

Hello

If it says baby is 1/5 engaged on my badger notes, does that mean he's barely engaged or deeply engaged? It feels like he's very low, the midwife had to go up under my bump to find the heartbeat. Google is telling me very different things.

Annoyingly it does depends on your trust.

When I was pregnant that would have meant he was very engaged.
Do you have alot of pressure?

I would say so, especially if I've been on my feet a lot. There's a lot of rubbing on the inside of my cervix too.

Does it say 1/5 engaged or 1/5 palpable? The former is how far into the pelvic brim the head is, while the latter is how much the midwife can feel when palpating your abdomen.

It says engagement 1/5. I've heard about palpable vs engaged, but I've also heard that some midwives say 1/5 engaged is almost fully engaged so I'm confused.

I’m a midwife and have never heard anyone state engagememt as 1/5 if they can only feel 1/5 of the fetal head, but perhaps different trusts and areas do things differently. To me 1/5 engaged means it’s barely engaged, but if baby’s heartbeat was found very low and you feel like you have a bowling ball between your legs, chances are good that your midwife meant she can only feel 1/5 of the head and baby is almost fully engaged in the pelvis. The only way to know for sure is to ask though! You could try ringing the community midwives and asking which way round they do it.
