Spiralling - Cramps normal at 6w pregnant?

Hi everyone,

I'm a bit all over the place, so apologies. Hoping I might be able to get some reassurance as I'm somewhat spiralling!
For context, we have had two unsuccessful IVF transfers. Neither implanted. Miraculously, we conceived naturally last month and I am, going by dates, 6w4d pregnant.
I went for a (very early) viability scan on Wednesday at 6w2d. There was no heartbeat yet as the embryo was measuring 5w5d. The sonographer said she wasn't overly concerned as the yolk sac etc looked normal for 5w5d. She thought I likely ovulated or implanted late and said to come back again in a week.
However, I have been having regular cramping in my tummy and lower back and I am so worried that I am miscarrying. This started over a week ago.

Is regular cramping normal for this stage of pregnancy? I am trying to prepare my heart for what could be happening, while desperately trying to cling on to any ounce of hope. I've no spotting or unusual discharge.

Really appreciate any response. 💗

I remember in my first pregnancy being absolutely convinced my period was about to start because of the cramping.
Wishing you all the best and fingers crossed for you

The cramping in my first pregnancy was so bad I thought it must be ectopic or I was miscarrying. It was so strong I’d struggle to walk and felt physically sick. Midwives were completely unconcerned and said it just be constipation! (It wasn’t). My baby is now 12!

good luck 🩷

That is so reassuring to hear... thank you both, @CopperTray and @ICanSpellConfusionWithaK for taking the time to reply. I will be sure to update 💖

Yes. I had all sorts of cramps and pains and stretching feelings in the first few weeks, some of them verging on painful. I spoke about it with a couple of friends who were pregnant at the same time and a few weeks ahead of me and they both has the same.

I know that doesn't mean it will be exactly the same for you but hopefully it's reassuring.

Yes, I think it's basically your womb stretching/hormones kicking in and it causes all sorts of cramps.

I remember in my first pregnancy googling “cramps but no period?” And the results throwing up pregnancy and being completely mind blown (in a good way!). Best wishes to you.

Yes I think it’s totally normal I’ve had it in the first trimester with both pregnancies. As long as there’s no bleeding I wouldn’t worry.

This happened to me too. Everything was fine.

I had horrendous cramps with both of mine. They were both born perfectly healthy. Try not to worry op, cramps are really very normal.

Changednamesorry · 31/10/2025 22:25

Yes I had cramping in the early days with all 3 of my pregnancies and it freaked me out but they were all fine But if you are worried, talk to your midwife 🧡

ali2021 · 31/10/2025 22:41

Thanks everyone. I haven't referred to a midwife/doctor yet as I have had myself convinced it's not going to work out. I will get a referral sorted on Monday. Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond. Very much appreciated 💗

I had cramping all the way through the first trimester when I was pregnant with my DD. At first I thought it was my period coming and kept wondering where it was 😂 Pregnancy was fine and she is now 4
