What was the first thing you ate after delivery? What was something you wished you packed (food) for after?

With my first I had cream crackers (no butter and also dont even like them) and cheese i didn't even like.(this was the only thing the midwives could find)
Wish I had absolutely anything else.

Second I had some homemade gingerbread, wish I had something more substantial so hoping for some inspiration from you ladies that I can make and will last for a spontaneous birth!

I thought everyone had toast and butter to be honest. The post birth toast is the best thing ever and everyone I’ve ever spoken with about this had toast also

shellyleppard · 24/10/2025 20:23

Tea and toast.....i could have eaten the whole loaf Lol

CheeseWisely · 24/10/2025 20:24

Toast and butter

TheRozzers · 24/10/2025 20:24

Toast, jam and a cup of tea was just perfect 👌 I was also glad to have packed nice olives, crisps and cookies 😋

MyAcornWood · 24/10/2025 20:26

The crappy toast and overly milky tea. Everyone goes on about how good it is… hard disagree, so underwhelming 😂 at least I wrangled some jam too.

AhWeNoss · 24/10/2025 20:30

I was given biscuits and tea… Asked the tea to be milky and sweet though so that was good.

I had gestational diabetes so one of the things I packed in my hospital bag was chocolates. Whilst not my first meal, it was very much something to look forward to!

Fluffydas · 24/10/2025 20:31

Toast. I had a section and on the ward I was on the food was delivered to a communal area. I couldn’t get there for 3 days so family brought food in. Occasionally a midwife would realise I couldn’t get to the food area and bring something. It was the best (becoming a mum to my amazing son)and worst (the lack of care and the mould on an old Victorian mat ward) week of my life. I hope things have improved

PunksVersusBrats · 24/10/2025 20:37

Nothing (mid 2000s). Gave birth at 8.30am so missed breakfast. Got a hot chocolate that I vommed back up (Pethadine). No lunch, as I hadn't ordered one so had crisps from the League of Friends shop. No dinner as I was asleep, hadn't ordered one so no-one woke me. I eventually got soggy toast 24 hours later.

My advice - just take all the food 😄

Meadowfinch · 24/10/2025 20:40

ds born at 7.50am

coffee & an apple, about 3pm when I woke up, then sausage. chips and peas at 6.30pm. It tasted fabulous 😊

Doorlockhandle321 · 24/10/2025 20:42

Dc1 was tea and toast 2 days later as was on itu it tasted awful (but I think anything would have).
Dt tea and toast it was amazing (first time in nine months I hadn't been sick) even better the staff gave it me in bed (all other mums had to fetch there own -to mobilise but twin mums got served in bed madness but I didn't complain)!

DramaAlpaca · 24/10/2025 20:45

Tea and toast - lovely. SIL sneaked a bottle of champagne onto the ward that evening, I only had a little bit as breastfeeding but that tasted amazing too.

Snugglemonkey · 24/10/2025 20:46

I had the tea and toast, however we also had a mini cheeseboard, olives, sun dried tomatoes and a wee kilner of pâté from m and s and some lovely crackers brought to the hospital when my first visitor, dc1 came. That was great, as I had missed dinner, so all there was at the hospital was ropey looking chicken salad or egg sandwiches. I was so appreciative after starving all day!

LaTable · 24/10/2025 20:48

Tbf, I got offered toast for breakfast with my second, but it was about 4 hours after I actually gave birth by which point without the bag of gingerbread cookies I think I would have eaten my left arm... also don't really like toast!
And was offered tea both times but I don't drink the stuff!
Starting to sound like a right arse with my eating habits aren't I 🤣🤣

So you didn’t wish for absolutely anything else then 😅 deff take your own food with you if you don’t like toast, crackers or cheese

onlyhereforthefood · 24/10/2025 20:52

Tea and toast immediately after birth. Then nothing for 24 hours as I had to stay in and I hospital food and I do not get along. First meal after that was a large dominoes pizza

Firstsuggestions · 24/10/2025 21:01

Tea and toast for my first. I'd also packed lucozade, really crisp granny smith apples, grapes, crisps, oaty bars, the fancy seashell chocolates and smoked nuts. I devoured the fruit and smoked nuts. I was really thirsty so wish I had bought in some squash.

Second I had at home so had a bacon sandwich with sweet tea (unbelievable), frozen raspberries and then a cheese plate with olives, nuts etc. loved giving birth at home because of access to all my food and always someone on hand to bring me picky bits.

jomaIone · 24/10/2025 21:05

First kid - 27 hour labour, nothing to eat or drink the whole day. I had about 6 rounds of toast with butter and a cup of tea. I don't remember eating anything else until breakfast the following day?!

Second kid - elective section, fasted from 7am, theatre at 5pm, back to ward at 6.30... I had 2 chicken mayo sandwiches on white bread, they were amazing! Then DH brought me a McDonalds breakfast in the morning 👌🏻

elliejjtiny · 24/10/2025 21:17

Fry up, chinese take away, Sainsbury's own version of chinese takeaway with my home birth and my quick discharge births. Hospital toast and jam with the others.

Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired · 24/10/2025 21:18

A falafel salad bowl brought to the hospital by my dh's boss. And then a burger king the next day!

MrsBucketHat · 24/10/2025 21:19

Toast but no tea! I was on very strict fluid intake for a while which was absolute torture!!!

Cerialkiller · 24/10/2025 21:21

Ds was born just before midnight so all three of us were allowed to stay in the birthing suit overnight. DH went to m and s in the morning so first meal was posh apple juice, hot chocolate and pain au raisin.

My dh has this planned! It's the only fast food nearby and on the way home 😅
The falafel salad sounds yum though, I'll have to check how long it will be in date because there is no chance I'll be grabbing one on the way in!

Toast and hot chocolate right after birth during the first bestest
breastfeed at 5am and 1am at both hospital birthday. Home before the next meal both times.

homemade burger and chips at my homebirth as soon as the midwives left.

SixSeven · 24/10/2025 22:11

My first day of ‘proper’ meals was planned. Runny eggs for breakfast, all the naughty cheeses for lunch, and a juicy steak for dinner.

Can’t remember what I ate post birth, but I was finally carted down to the delivery suite for induction clutching my bowl of chocolate sponge and custard. I wasn’t missing the rest of my lunch.

westcott · 24/10/2025 22:12

Toast and jam. I brought my own can of coke. Tasted like heaven
