Success stories of empty sac at first scan and/or dates wrong!

Hi all,

For background - super irregular periods, took almost 18 months to conceive my first 4 years ago, lots of tracking and tears along the way.

This time I thought I won’t stress, I’ll come off the pill end of May. Had my first period a month after coming off the pill so late June, then another bleed on 28th July. Due period end of August as I thought, had no major bleed but spotting so never took this for a period. Stupidly can’t remember the date of spotting.

So I tested positive for the first time on 05/09/25. Unsure of ovulation as I wasn’t tracking, just felt ‘off’.

Moving on to last Tuesday 7th October, had a stitch like pain so called epu, they advised to come in for scan on Thursday (9th). Going from my last proper period (July) I dated myself at almost 10 weeks. Sonographer went super quiet and told me sac not measuring for a 10 week pregnancy. He said it’s either likely to be only a 6 week pregnancy in which case are yet to find anything in the sac, or if my dates are correct then baby had unfortunately died at 6 weeks so a MMC. Told me to wait 2 weeks for re scan.

I’m now panicking and even though dates could be wrong, I’m thinking the worst 😞 has anyone been so wrong with their dates and has a positive story for me? All I see online is negatives from this.

Thanks in advance x

With a positive test on 5/9 you can’t be any less than 7-8 weeks right now. (7 weeks if you tested positive at 7dpo. More like 8 if you were 14dpo). When you tested positive was it a strong positive or quite faint? If you are closer to the 7 weeks now, and had the scan over a week ago it is possible to have been about 6 weeks at that time. Unfortunately in these situations all you can do is wait and see.

@ShowMightythanks for your reply ☺️ it came up quick but wasn’t super strong. The lines were stronger in colour around a week after my first positive. I am hoping my dates are just so out, I don’t think I give my body enough time to adjust from the pill to get back in to a rhythm before falling pregnant so fingers crossed it was just simply too early to see anything. X

Hi,

I used donor sperm and so tracked my dates religiously. And whilst I can’t be 100% on ovulation as BBT tracking was a step too far for me, I can be certain within 24hours I’d say.

I went for a 6 week scan, they saw an empty sac and said it looked “more like 5, if that”. After two losses I was gutted. This was on the Thursday, I went to my EPU on the Monday morning, saw a heartbeat. I’m now nearly 26 weeks.

in the early days things change so quickly. Unfortunately it is a waiting game, but fingers and toes crossed that it’s a positive outcome for you OP xx
