Progesterone Pessary / Cyclogest - Excruciating itch!

Has anyone any remedies for a burning itch when using progesterone pessaries?

I used in my last pregnancy and didn't have this issue at all. I'm about 7 days into taking them now and its really irritating me.

I shower everyday, wear a pad when using the pessary, change underwear twice a day.

YES! Though I take for HRT. I just slather the area in vagisan first to act as a barrier, like you would for nappy cream, and it definitely helps

Or it could be thrush, triggered by all the pessary insertion?

I had this problem, was really fun trying to time the thrush pessaries with the progesterone pessaries 😂

I did have a little mirror check and doesn't look like thrush 😂 That was my first thought though. I'll keep an eye on it (grim, I know) 😂

Yes, I popped some baseline this morning after my shower before inserting it and I definitely don't feel as irritated but not sure if it's just soothing it for a few hours haha

As if pessaries aren't grim enough.

I had this so bad. The only thing that has worked for me is changing the pessary to rectally.. It isn't nice but it doesn't have as much residue this way and so I find it doesn't cause any irritation.

Confusedmermaid1 · 16/10/2025 19:13

Another vote for taking it rectally.. it really turned things around for me. Less mess, no need for pads and less irritation. I was also spotting taking it vaginally and it eventually stopped, not sure if that was coincidence or not but spotting can be due to cervical irritation apparently..

Another vote for up the booty. You can just pop it up there and forget about it, no leakage or anything.

Hellothere89 · 17/10/2025 20:14

Agree - put it up your bum! My consultant told me they were better absorbed that way anyway (more blood vessels apparently). The things we go through!

BudgetBuster · 17/10/2025 20:40

Oh ladies... I cannot cope with the idea of putting anything uo my bum 😂

@BudgetBuster honestly I felt exactly the same as you.. exit only and thought it always would be 😅 but it was so worth it for me..
Squat, real low 😂 it’s not painful, just a bit uncomfortable to do at first. It honestly changed my life, didn’t know how I was going to make it to 16 weeks before the change.

If you hate it you never have to do it again and can go back to vaginally 😬

Maybe tomorrow 😂 If I'm brave enough haha

You'd think after a horrific labour before and nearly dying I'd be OK with just putting a pessary UK but nope, my brain.cannot compute why I'd do that haha

I used to pop mine up there when I was on the loo. Honestly once you get used to the idea you'll never go back!
