I'm about 11 weeks pregnant, and was at my friend's the other day - her son had shingles. I didn't know before I went.

I myself had shingles a few years ago - is there any risk to me or my baby? Can't find definite answer on google! I also had chicken pox as a child.

if you def had chic pox then you're fine. my mom got shingles recently and she couldn't remember if i'd had chic pox so i had to have a blood test.

i had shingles years ago,and at the time my sister was pregnant she had 3months to go and had come back to nz to have her son, when i got diagnosed with this my sister went to her mw and she said not to come in any contact with me,she caught the next flight home hope this helps, see a docter or midwife to be on the safe side goodluck

I had shingles a few years back. I also had chicken pox. Shingles can come back I was told by my doc.

You could always mention it to your GP and/or midwife and see what they say instead of trawling the internet. Did your friend not know you are pregnant or that her son has shingles??

You are fine as long as you have had chicken pox, and you have or else you wouldn't have had shingles. I had shingles when my sister was pregnant and that was the advice to us from the gp.

I would mention it to your MW - sure it will be fine, but just to set your mind at rest.

I believe you can catch chicken pox from a person with shingles if you've never had chicken pox before, but afaik you can't catch shingles from a person with shingles. Shingles occurs because of a latent part of the virus (as I understand it from reading wikipedia) that remains in your body after having had chicken pox that can manifest itself many years later.

You can't catch shingles from someone with shingles. If you have ever had chicken pox, you can develop shingles at any stage in later life but it is usually triggered by illness/lowered immune system/stress/sun exposure - not by contact with someone with shingles.

If you have never had chicken pox, then there is a small chance of catching it from someone with shingles but you would have had to have come into direct contact with their lesions (rash).

And for the record, I had shingles in pregnancy. I took a course of acyclovir antiviral tablets and there was no effect on the baby.

This happened to me a few months ago and I was worried it would harm baby. But I have had the chicken pox and have had the vaccine, so therefore your baby should be protected. It's when they come out of that lovely warm home that you have to worry about all these yucky viruses.
