2 vessel cord instead of 3……

Hiya, at my 20 week scan we were told our girl only has 2 vessels in her cord not 3. I’ve not been given anymore information on what happens with this or what it could mean or cause…. I’ve obviously googled 😬 but I’m just wondering if anybody’s in the same boat or has been? What information you were given, and what the outcome was if possible please. Thank you x

Hi, are they going to do a re scan? They couldn’t see any vessels on my scan and I was out of my mind with worry, they did a re scan and still couldn’t see what they was looking for! They wouldn’t re scan after that as I’d passed the amount of weeks or something but my son is now 8 months old and completely healthy x

Yeah they said I’ll have extra scans from 28 weeks I’m just feeling like it’s all a bit of the unknown tbh as nobody has spoken to me about it x

I had this, had an extra growth scan at 36 weeks. Baby absolutely fine (he’s 2). Sorry I can’t actually remember what I was told at the time!

A friend of mine found out very late in her pregnancy that there was only 1 instead of 3. Her baby was smaller than normal, I think in the 3rd percentile, she was given more scans to make sure that he was growing okay. She went into labour spontaneously a month early and he’s absolutely fine. A smaller baby than most but beautifully healthy! 💕

My notes post section said 2 vessel cord and I recall doing some research, mostly its extra scans to check for growth of the baby, if a baby isn’t thriving in the uterus they can make the decision to see if early delivery would be better for the baby. Most babies with 2 vessels are fine, but it’s good to be monitored

Yep, both dc. Apart from being smaller than average at birth (6lb range) no other issues. Went through loads of testing with dd2 as not in uk, they said all kinds of scary possibilities and she’s now an adult with zero health concerns. Found out about a 3 years after dd2 was born that dd1 also had a 2 vessel cord but nobody told me at the time. My siblings and I were all 6lbers too

FlippyKiYayFlippyFlipper · 06/10/2025 21:57

My DD was born prematurely at 28 weeks. There is an increased risk so this may have contributed but we won’t ever know for certain.

I don’t feel I was taken seriously when I started getting significant back pain and more could have been done to delay her birth. Keep an eye on it and speak to your midwife if you have any concerns.

I had a velamentous insertion that blocked off one of the vessels. Baby was 5lb but otherwise fine and did well.

BeeandG · 06/10/2025 22:30

I had this. Baby went to term+10. Had growth scan at 36 weeks I think , completely inaccurate. Dd was 6lb 13 born so not huge. Delivery was induction and then forceps as cord was wrapped around her torso. Personally I think her growth was possibly affected but never mentioned. She's a healthy 8yr old now and you'd never know she'd had a 2 vessel cord.

heyyy

looking at this report, these are vessels in the heart that they couldn’t see on your baby.
The Sonographer will have two attempts at assessing them. If they have difficulty seeing them on the second appointment they can’t book another.

OP is on about the umbilical cord not the heart vessels.
❤️

Thank you all so much for your replies, I really appreciate it, just having people to talk to about it just makes me feel so much better so thank you x
