Hello everyone, I really hope I can get some solid advice and help on this stressful situation please

I am writing this on behalf of my close friend - she is too stressed and worried to ask.

She takes a contraceptive pill religiously - its called Cerelle - here is a link for the pill:

onlinedoctor.lloydspharmacy.com/uk/contraception/cerelle

She does not want to get pregnant, and so takes this all the time - she may have a few health problems like high blood pressure, or thyroid issues - i think maybe over active thyroid - but apart from that completely healthy, She just had blood tests done for overall health and all came back normal

Anyway, she is dating someone for many years, they have sex but as shes always taken the pill, nothing has ever come of it.

Date wise - the 3 most recent times she has had sex with her partner was:

  1. Last week of March 2025 - So 28 weeks ago from today
  2. 18th June 2025 - So 15 weeks ago from today
  3. 20th August 2025 - 6 weeks ago

A few weeks ago, she experienced some pain in stomach - she believes this was down to eating something, since then - she has had no pain.
Normal pregnancy symptoms - she has not had any of these.

She always does pregnancy tests just to make sure and always was negative.

However, about 3 weeks from now - so like week beginning 15th September - she did a clear blue pregnancy test. It is the one which shows a blue line as pregnant - the link is below

www.superdrug.com/health/conception/pregnancy-tests/clearblue-visual-early-detection-pregnancy-test-1-test/p/840800

Anyway, as they always are negative, I think she didnt concentrate perhaps or something, but when she looked at it - there was a clear but faint blue line - She cannot remember if this was showing immediately in the time frame you are supposed to check - but she can be sure even after the window time - there was a blue line which I also saw myself.

She took that test in the afternoon.

This has then scared her - so she has gone and got 2 different clear blue test kits - the digital one which will say the words pregnant or not.
She also got some pink dye tests - in total she purchased 7 urine pregnancy tests and proper branded ones

After that positive test result, a few days after she took the clear blue digital - it was negative.
Then all the other urine tests - they were all negative also - these included the pink dye tests.

All 7 urine tests, she took them first thing in the morning where her urine was most concentrated - and made sure not to over dilute her urine - but they all said negative.
She took all 7 tests on different mornings throughout that week.

Following on from this - last Saturday - 27th September - she had a blood test appointment at a private clinic - called a Quantitative HCG Blood test - also known as a beta HCG
The link for the place is below:

onedaytests.com/products/hcg-blood-test

The results of this blood test say

HCG (Venous) Result - <0.0 mIU/mL

Now we understand it says 0 or less than 0 if thats even possible???
She emailed the company to say is this a normal result as was expecting some kind of number to show?? And they just said a non pregnant women can have a result of 0 more often than not.

She was worried that perhaps the test was faulty or invalid as no HCG number was detected - not even like 0.11111 etc if that makes sense?

I guess what she wants to know is - from that first time of sex which is 28 weeks from now - when the blood test said the result of 0.0 - is it humanly possible for a pregnant person to be 27 weeks and have HCG showing 0??

Also is it humanly possible to have 7 morning Urine tests done and all be negative even if you are actually 24 - 26 weeks pregnant??

Based on the timings -
she would either be 27 - 28 weeks pregnant
15 weeks
or 6 weeks

Can a HCG blood test show 0 HCG levels if a lady was 6, 15, or over 26 weeks pregnant
Can 7 urine tests show negative if a lady was 6, 15, or 26 weeks pregnant??

She was scared because apparently 1 positive urine test is all you need for confirmation?

Also, she says she is getting no symptoms like kicking from a baby, or sickness or sore breasts etc.

Also, she is too scared to see her local GP or local health service as she does not want to share this info with them, also her family go to that GP and know her GP.

It is just that somebody posted on a pregnancy forum saying they had a HCG blood test done where there levels were very low - Im not sure if they meant 0 - or just very low- and she says she was still pregnant.

But we just thought it would be impossible to have 0 HCG and be heavily pregnant?? Especially as all 3 dates are many weeks ago now??

I think the biggest worry is if she was 28 weeks pregnant now, and cannot do anything about it - as she does not want to have children right now - but worried the blood test says 0 HCG because shes too far pregnant

So sorry for the long reply, really hope to hear from anyone about this please.

Thank you

Mat

She is not pregnant. She has zero HCG because she is not pregnant.

I'm confused as to why she thinks she might be, but you can reassure her that she is definitely not!

MattW19 · 03/10/2025 15:40

Thank you

But the first urine test she did with clear blue showed 1 blue faint line which people say 1 positive is much more unlikley to be wrong than lots of negatives?

Also just based on the dates like if she was 27 or more weeks pregnant could the urine tests still show false negatives?? Or can the HCG show 0?

Im just basing this on some people saying they were pregnant even when their blood tests came back negative??

Thank you for your kind reply

Blood tests are more reliable than urine tests. If her HCG is zero then she's definitely not pregnant

Boroughparade · 03/10/2025 15:49

Op there’s no shame in saying this is you

ArthriticOldLabrador · 03/10/2025 15:52

She’s not pregnant- she can stop worrying and move on with her life.

NestaArcheron · 03/10/2025 15:53

She’s not pregnant. What she saw was likely an indent line, which appears if you do not look in the allocated time window. There is absolutely no way with 6 more tests and a blood test that shows 0 HCG that she is pregnant.

Takintoda3 · 03/10/2025 16:05

This is the weirdest post I've read on this board.

And strangely the second post about this <0.00 level of HCG within the past week.

Henbags · 03/10/2025 16:06

What the heck is this. Why does it matter that her family go to the same GP, the GP would not talk to the family about it. Is she very young and this is why she is so scared to see the GP? We are not medics. If she thinks she might be 27 WEEKS PREGNANT then she needs to go and have a scan.

Henbags · 03/10/2025 16:07

Have you already posted about this less than 0 result of HCG the other day, because this seems very familiar. No HCG means no pregnancy. Anyone can get a blue line on a clear blue if they leave it for half an hour to an hour.

Honestly this is for a close friend, she suffers quite badly with anxiety and so as you can imagine shes just been so worried and is even considering doing a second blood test in a few weeks time to make sure the hcg still says 0

Wow.. i have just asked kindly for some advice to give a worried friend. I did not expect anyone to shout about it? Sorry for asking. No worries

Clear blue are known for false positives. Renowned for it. She had one false positive probably not in the time frame and then another 6 negative tests. She isn’t pregnant. The blood test though unnecessary confirmed this.

Kaybee1989 · 03/10/2025 16:19

I’ve heard that later on in a pregnancy you can get a negative urine test because the HCG is too high but her blood test is <0.0… she is not pregnant. The bloods would be in the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands by now!
I think rather than another blood test she might be best seeing a therapist to help with her anxiety which seems, after reading this post, absolutely debilitating. I hope she can find some peace soon.

me24x · 03/10/2025 16:21

Just book a private ultrasound at window to the womb or similar and then you’ll know for definite and she can stop stressing but with a HCG reading of 0 I’m pretty sure nothing is going to be there

I have seen this post on here this isn’t the first time this has been posted. She is categorically not pregnant how could a blood test showing zero give any sign there’s pregnancy and given the abundance of negative tests it’s very odd to even question it. You need to reassure her she’s not pregnant and to see her gp
