HCG blood test result says 0???

Hello my friend did a clear blue urine test last week (the blue dye one with 1 line for pregnant)

It showed a very faint line but think it may have been past the time window

This got her really scared. She then got 6 more urine tests, some clear blue digital and other brands including pink dye tests.

She did them all each morning first urine of the day and all showed negative.

She has got a HCG blood test done but the confusing thing is the result says

HCG (Venous) <0.0

We know anything less than 5 should be negative but cant make sense of this result??

Is 0.0 a normal result for a negative?? Just thought it was say above 0.0 and below 5.00

That is whats confusing her

Appreciate any help regarding this

0.0 is very normal as a negative result. It means she's not pregnant.

Tests are invalid if you look at them after the timeframe, so she should ignore that first result. Lots of tests get a "positive" line if you leave them

Thank you so much for the reply PurpleTurtleMoose

The lab sent her an email and it says

HCG (Venous)

<0.0 mIU/ml

We did not know if this meant the test is invalid or wrong or if it is saying its less than 0 as it has the arrow?? We just thought it needs to say below 5 but above 0 to be a valid result for a negative.

So <0.0 basically means negative right? She wants to be negative as she took all precautions also.

Can anyone else shed some light on this pls?

I wouldn't read anything more into it than that she's not pregnant.

Thanks for the replies

Its because it said <0.00 which makes it seem like less than 0 which would indicate undetectable

It’s probably the standard way they write 0miu to be honest. I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you or her. It just means she got the result she wants, doesn’t it?

Cswizard12 · 30/09/2025 08:30

Yeah she was worried as she did not want to be at this point of her life. Many thanks then for your reassuring replies :)

Undetectable would be what you want.
It’s less than 0.00 so it could be 0.001, for example.

Cswizard12 · 30/09/2025 10:13

Yes she does not want to be
Sorry do you mean minus 0? As 0.001 is greater than 0.0

OP posts:

OP why does this matter so much?

HCG is for all intents and purposes zero! Confirmed with urine and bloods.
She's not pregnant!

Cswizard12 · 30/09/2025 10:31

I know its because some people have said they had no hcg found and was pregnant

https://community.whattoexpect.com/forums/october-2020-babies/topic/pregnant-but-no-hcg-90368979.html

This thread is an example. Which really did not make sense at all to have negative tests, 0 hcg blood test. And stil be pregnant

A blood test can't have a minus result. There can't be less than zero hcg.
The result <0.00 is compatible with a result of 0.001. But this is irrelevant as both are way below 5.
There will be an error rate on the test so you will always get a tiny percentage of people who are pregnant despite a negative test. All medical tests have an error rate. If she has some reason to still believe she is pregnant then she should seek medical advice.

Takintoda3 · 30/09/2025 11:56

Ok, so all she can do is wait and if her period doesn't come, test again.
