Leg cramps in the night in pregnancy

Bella1905 · 23/09/2025 15:41

I am 30 weeks pregnant and keep waking up in the middle of the night with awful cramps in my calf. Does anyone know of any way I can stop this, or something I can take perhaps? Between that and frequent toilet trips I am not enjoying the nights at the moment. Thanks

I had the same, it's excruciating isn't it?

The Midwife suggested tonic water (apparently quinine can help) but I don't like it and when I was pregnant I couldn't have drunk it without throwing up so had to put up with it. It stopped after I gave birth.

I remember those, you have my sympathies.

I also was recommended a tonic, but it tasted so vile i think id rather have the cramps.

Try magnesium glycinate tablets and maybe a magnesium body spray. Can get in chemist or health shop

I have this too. I’ve found calf and hip flexor stretches before bed have really helped.

magnesium supplements as above. I started taking them in pregnancy for twitchy legs and have never stopped.

You can get magnesium spray . You have my sympathy OP

I had these. Not fun!
Magnesium cream massaged into legs by DH before bed along side stretching and making sure I was hydrated really helped. Although the hydration did make the nighttime toilet trips more frequents…

Thanks so much all. Really appreciate it. I’ll nip to Boots tomorrow and try these. In the meantime I’m dreading tonight’s sleep 😂🤦
