Is this Vanishing Twin Syndrome?

I’m around 6 weeks pregnant and due to spotting and stomach pains I was referred to the Early Pregnancy Unit for tests. On my first blood test my HCG levels were 1,900 and we seen 2 sacs on a scan. My HCG has now dropped to 1,200 so it’s not low enough to say it’s a miscarriage of both twins for certain. Could this be Vanishing Twin Syndrome? Waiting for a scan on Tuesday.

I didn't know that was a thing, but having googled it sounds like what happened to me. I had a dating scan, and I was not as pg as we thought I was. There were 2 blobs on the screen but when we came back the next week to check there was only one. When DS was born there was an extra mini umbilical cord on the placenta. But I don't remember any tests being done so I can't help you on that front.

We have twins and I had a similar occurrence. We were advised it might be vanishing twin syndrome a little later, when one of our twins measured 5 weeks behind at the first scan.

I don't want to offer false hope, but both of ours made it all the way, albeit that our 'vanishing' twin had and still had quite a fight on her hands. She is very special. Whatever the news for you this week, I wish you all the best.

@JennyForeigner I’m sorry to hear you experience similar but, I’m glad both of your twins were okay! Can I ask if you had a drop in HCG? I’m only around 5-6 weeks x

I can't recall if I was tested but I definitely understood something to have happened - like you I was spotting, and I had a sudden lifting of serious sickness (which returned in full force as hyperemisis a couple of weeks later). I went to the hospital where they couldn't find a second heartbeat at the time, but the perception was that it might just be slightly too early for one twin. We then waited for our 12 week scan where one twin measured 7 weeks, then nothing happened until she surprised us all by still being there and somewhat caught up at 20 weeks. I very much hope for a similar positive outcome for you.
