Dropping HGC levels - can they go back up?

Trigger warning - possible miscarriage

I’m around 5-6 weeks pregnant and I have been having cramps so was referred to the Early Pregnancy Unit. They found 2 sacs but couldn’t see much more as it’s only early. So, they did a blood test to detect HCG levels. On the first test they were 1,900 now they’re 1,200 which suggests possible miscarriage. But, they have said they haven’t gone down enough to say for certain so I’m having a scan to measure the size of the sacs in 2 days.

Has anyone ever had their HCG levels decrease and then go back to normal? I’m just trying to remain positive as this would be my third loss 😩

I'm so sorry you're going through this @Gee94 I miscarried in February so really empathise. In my case, my hcg was rising very slowly but not doubling. I had blood draws every 2 days for two weeks. I eventually did miscarry. I believe that doubling (or close to) indicates a healthy and developing pregnancy. Mine didn't start to decline until I began passing clots.

In your case, since there were two sacs that might impact the levels. I wish I had better advice for you and I sincerely hope you get clarity very soon. Have you been referred to recurrent miscarriage clinic? In Ireland it's two losses but I think UK is 3. Might be something to speak to your GP about going forward xx

@ForGiddyDreamer I’m sorry for your loss :( Thank you for your reply and advice, it means a lot.

I have read about Vanishing Twin Syndrome, and the hospital think this could be a possibility. I just don’t know anyone who has experienced this and wondering if the drop in HCG could still indicate one twin is okay?

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Unfortunately this happened to me. I lost twins at 10 weeks and I went through the hcg drop.

I doubt hcg would drop from 1900 to 1200 and go back up again 😢 the only thing I would say is perhaps unfortunately one sac is not growing but the other one is continuing and that is why the hcg has dipped but fingers crossed you get good news that one of sacs are growing xx

The waiting for answers and more blood tests and scan is the hardest, take care of yourself

@Gee94 You'd need another blood draw to see what's happening. The level should go up if one embryo is still there and doing well. The scan in 2 days time should give you some clarity too. The wait is so difficult ❤️

Thanks, the miscarriage was my first pregnancy. I had a chemical the month after but conceived again in July. I'm just over 10 weeks now and trying to take each day as it comes.
