Hair dye in first trimester?

I am desperate to get my hair dyed as my roots are looking awful but NHS guidance on hair dye in first trimester is very vague - 'you may wish to wait until after 12 weeks' - is it really unsafe? The wording suggests not but the fact they aren't saying that it's fine is worrying me.

I didn’t risk it, I am sure it’s fine though… i need to dye mine also (desperate!) I’m 11 weeks in a few days GrinGrin

I personally wouldn’t, I waited until 18 weeks but even then I wouldn’t have done it unless desperate

Entirely your decision but I asked my midwife and hairdresser who said it was absolutely fine. The hairdresser just asked me to have another patch test beforehand to be on the safe side but I've had mine done throughout.

It's absolutely fine!

I think it’s probably fine… I used the naturtint one - it says on their website safe to use in pregnancy! I’ve seen it in Waitrose and Holland and Barrett.

I was desperate both of my pregnancies and just about managed to wait until 12 weeks, but I’m more on the anxious side for anything pregnancy related!

does anyone know who I can ask about this? It’s so hard in the first trimester where you have no point of contact

You won't get an official definitive answer because no one can test all the hair dyes on pregnant women. You can trust Mumsnet answers, or sources online, or ask a hairdresser. Or just not do it.
Google "Mumsnet hair dye pregnancy" for loads of threads about this.

My consultant said it was fine - it doesn’t touch the scalp (in a direct soaking in kinda way), it didn’t have ammonia in it. I had a tint at about 17 weeks and will do so again at 36 weeks.

I’m also pretty sure I had a tint done just before conception

I had highlights done in my first trimester and didn't feel concerned about it. So much service is really vague because enough studies haven't been done, so they can't tell you it's conclusively fine. In Emily oster's book expecting better she talks about hair dye and basically says it's fine, it's a small amount of chemical, you aren't ingesting it and not a worry. Of course don't do it if it'll stress you out more, but I say go for it and don't worry about it

It’s utter nonsense, of course you can. I did with my first pregnancy and I have with this pregnancy.
