Had pre op for c section, bloods were taken. Then day of c section it was cancelled due to service demands. Now it’s scheduled for Monday and they said more bloods will be taken. Does anyone know why

Normally blood samples are taken at the pre op appointment . They could just be monitoring carefully due to pregnancy

@shellyleppard yes had bloods taken at my pre op on 11th, c section was suppose to be on the 12th today…. But they called and said sorry they cancelled mine due to service demands.
then said it’s now booked for the 15th and more bloods will be taken. I guess it’s normal

Icu nurse here. If they sent samples for group and save (incase you need a transfusion) the lab usually only hold the results for 48 hours. After this, if blood is needed for you, the lab ask for a new sample to confirm blood type again.

Could this be the reason?

Crispynoodle · 12/09/2025 22:13

To make sure nothing has changed since the last time. They need the most up to date information

Mummy2025x · 12/09/2025 22:15

@Crispynoodle i doubt anything will change with my
blood from the 11th to
the 15th lol but ok

@Mrspimplepopper yes I think you are correct I know the bloods were taken in case I need a transfusion, so that’s probably
it thanks

Yes it's likely to be the group and screen test to check your blood group (which won't change) but also screen for antibodies also. The antibody status can change so the haematology labs would need a sample within 24/48 hours usually, in case you need a transfusion during or post surgery.

@Mrspimplepopper thank you!

It will be so there's a sample available for cross matching if you need a blood transfusion. Samples don't last that long so a fresh one is needed.

Hope everything goes well for you

Mummy2025x · 12/09/2025 22:21

@petitpasta thanks :) I am very nervous to be honest.

Obs anaesthetist…as per pp’s it sounds like it’s just the routine group and save sample. An obstetric g&s is usually only valid for 2-3 days before it needs repeating.
