Asymmetrical swelling!? What is happening?

I’m only 13 weeks pregnant, is it unusual to have swelling in my ankle? It’s only one ankle, the right one. It’s swollen for 2 days now, I haven’t gotten any other symptom other than tightness. I’m 9 and a half stone so it’s not weight, I haven’t tripped or fallen, I have no clue what is happening. I’ve tried phone early pregnancy maternity triage and not had anyone contact me back after being told just to leave my name number and a message, slightly unsettling. I tried phoning my GP today and was told to go through the online option of requesting an appointment… not heard back from doctor or maternity unit. I’m currently on hold with NHS 111 because I’m scared this is a blood clot or something, has anyone had this before and it’s been ok or have any advice??

Could you call 111 for some advice? It might put your mind at ease, as I’m guessing you won’t hear from the EPU or see the GP until Monday at least now. Good luck x

I’d suggest 111 as well.

One leg only could be a problem, so you’d prob want your mind put at rest. You don’t want to ignore it in case it’s serious. I’d just phone or Youll get no rest from worry.

Hopefully 111 can guide but due to being symptomatic of a blood clot I'd probably head to A&E. Do you have any pain or redness/warmth in the area? X

thank you for your advice! pain at times, no redness or warmth in the area… I don’t have any other symptoms other than it being slightly swollen and tight feeling? I am on the phone to 111 just now, just to be safe… is something bad gonna happen ? Will baby be okay if this is a clot? I’m just so new and so confused and scared with all of this🥺

Sounds like you’ve had a nightmare of a day trying to get advice, sorry it’s been stressful for you!

Hopefully 111 can get you an out of hours GP appointment for tomorrow. It could a clot, they may well want to do your bloods and maybe refer you to the hospital for an ultrasound of your leg. DVTs are more common in pregnancy. If there is a clot they will just put you on blood thinners that are safe in pregnancy. I know it’s easier said than done, but do try not to worry! Your baby will be okay.

Keep us updated. Blood clots are very easily treatable and baby will be fine. They are surprisingly common during pregnancy due to increased blood volume. Usually they do present with some redness, warmth amd pain. Hopefully it is nothing to be concerned about but if it is a clot, know that its treatable and both you and baby will be okay. Just requires prompt action and its always better to be safe! Thinking of you x
