Positive test followed by a negative

Context is massively important here.

I haven’t had sex in 16 weeks, but I’ve had a lot of pregnancy symptoms that I ignored, including flutters and a little bump (unsure if it’s a bump or bloating) I finally built up the courage to take a test last night, and I saw those two positive lines as I was actively peeing on it (I’ll add a photo. I didn’t take a photo of the test, because I was panicking, but I sent a video to my friend, so here’s a trimmed screenshot) This morning, I took another test to be sure, and it was negative. Since it’s been 16 weeks since I had sex, I’ve been told it could be the hook effect.

Any advice?

this calls for a third test!

I always took the most recent though, so at this point I’d be thinking negative

My advice would be go to your doctor and get a blood test done or an ultrasound. Sometimes you’ve got to bite the bullet and face things head on. I hope things go the way you want them to 💕 either way we’re here for you!

Oddly enough… you don’t mention whether or not you’ve had a period in those 16 weeks

Just3ok · 09/09/2025 14:48

Which is somewhat relevant

someone mentioned I haven’t spoken about periods - I actually have pcos, so my periods are insanely irregular anyway. Not having a period for 4 months isn’t unusual to me:)

If you think you might be 16 weeks pregnant, go to the doctor!

Just3ok · 09/09/2025 15:05

How old are you? Have you been pregnant before?

Get yourself a 3rd test

I believe these pregnancy tests are not reliable later in a pregnancy (something about the hormone they've testing for dropping once you are past a certain point, and they're developed for early pregnancy) so I'd recommend you speak to GP about a blood test and an ultrasound. Good luck!

It is possible that the test became flooded with you peeing directly onto it, causing a false positive. If the test becomes flooded with urine the dye leaks and settles where a positive line would normally show. I have experienced this the supermarket tests. I would test again but dip rather than pee directly onto the stick. I hope you get the result you want.

Did you get a third test op?
