Period late but negative test

Hi all

Has anybody been late on their (otherwise regular) periods but tested negative on a pregnancy test?

AF was due to arrive on Monday. DH and I had unprotected sex on Tuesday (but all other times this month it was protected). So AF was already a day late when we DTD - but it’s running to 4 days late now which is very unusual for me. I wondered if anybody had been in a similar situation?

thank you so much x

p.s. DH and I don’t have children yet but we had agreed to start TTC (properly!) in September this year, so it really wouldn’t be a problem if I was pregnant. Just don’t want to get my hopes up haha!

Monday was the start of September so on track with your starting TTC plan!

You won’t be pregnant from the Tuesday unprotected

when did you have unprotected before then?

bumble432 · 04/09/2025 13:01

Thanks both! Tuesday was the first time that we had (full) sex unprotected. Although we did use the pull out method a couple of times earlier this month (again, for the first time), which I guess is also a form of unprotected sex!

So you’re asking if you’re pregnant from having sex two days ago when your period was due on Monday?

Coconutter24 · 04/09/2025 13:35

More likely to be pregnant from one of the couple of times it was unprotected earlier in the month….. if you are

Coconutter24 · 04/09/2025 13:36

Have you recently come of hormonal contraception?

MomToBe2025xx · 04/09/2025 14:40

Are you starting to track your cycles? It’ll probably help a lot as you’ll know when your ovulating, unfortunately I don’t think dtd the day after your period was due will do anything… best of luck 🥰

bumble432 · 04/09/2025 14:55

Thanks so much for all the replies, I really appreciate it 🥰

I came off the pill when we got married over a year ago, we’ve been using condoms since.

I realise I am unlikely to be pregnant but at least it’s making me realise how much I’d like to be! I’ve always been quite nervous before but I actually felt a bit disappointed when the test was negative this morning (even though I wasn’t really expecting a positive), so that’s telling!

it is strange/unusual that AF is so late but I guess that could be down to all sorts of things….

It’s almost impossible to get pregnant the day after your period is due.

Presumably you’ll learn this stuff as you’ll be TTC, but you have a fertile window of less than a week every cycle, which will be around the midpoint of your cycle.

Having a regular cycle should help you track it all a bit easier, when you’re ready to. If you’re anything like me, your cycle and your mind will play all sorts of tricks on you when in the midst of TTC.

Goodluck!

If you’ve been having protected sex and only had unprotected sex two days ago, there’s no way a pregnancy test would be positive.

Sorejaws · 04/09/2025 15:17

I think maybe dusting off your school biology text books OP would be a good start?

Thank you! Yes that’s a great idea - I’ll definitely start tracking my cycles :)

Yes that’s what I suspected really - it will be a relief once AF arrives and then I’ll know for certain!

This happens to me. Periods are pretty much 28-29 days then every 2 years I get a 2 or 3 month run of 35 day cycles. Never due to pregnancy, just of those weird things.
