hi all, so I’ve just found out I’m pregnant 🥰 I did my nhs online referral to the midwife yesterday and got a call today that was very quick and she asked me if I was referred to a specialist team for my last pregnancy, I said no and she said can I put you on hold of course I said yes, she came back and said she has referred me to a specialist team at the hospital that will be in touch because I take steroid inhalers for my asthma, is this any cause for concern ? Any idea what ‘team’ I’m being referred to ? It was very quick and took me by surprise so I didn’t ask any questions and feel a bit silly for not doing so but now I’ve thought about it a little anxiety is creeping in x

Hi OP. I have severe asthma (I have biologic* injections for it every few weeks) and was consultant led. No specialist team as such other than being consultant led. Congratulations btw!

Some hospitals have a team of midwives and/or an obstetric physician who specialise in underlying medical conditions and pregnancy. It sounds like you meet their criteria in this hospital.

If your asthma is mild they might just meet you and refer you back to mainstream midwifery care. They tend to give extra care and often you get the team when you’re in labour too so can be a better option.
