Low heart rate at viability scan

Yesterday I went for a viability scan at 6+6, this is dated from my LMP. When I arrived the lady scanned me and saw a flickering heart beat but advised that a transvaginal scan would be better so we went ahead. Again, she was able to see a heartbeat but said this heartbeat was only 78 which is low.

The lady then discussed my dates with me as she said the baby was very small and from her judgment, she believed the baby was only measuring around 5 weeks. This doesn’t shock me as I know we had intercourse only once during my cycle and this was 5 weeks ago.

My main concern is the low heart rate as, of course I came home and googled. I came across so many horror stories that the likelihood is this pregnancy will end in a loss. We have been offered a rescan in 2 weeks and told to stay positive. (I am not positive!) I’m reaching out to see if there are any success stories as I need some positivity right now. I am really struggling and not sure how I am going to keep myself sane these next 2 weeks.

You have to add two weeks onto conception date to get the proper pregnancy dating. So if you had sex 5 weeks ago you’d be 7 weeks pregnant now (Give or take some days). So if you’re measuring 5 weeks when you should be 7ish it might not be good news. No one can say for definite but it doesn’t sound good.

Hello, I’m going through a similar wait although we didn’t see a heartbeat, we’ve to go back next week as the sac didn’t grow as much as it should have. The wait is excruciating already. I have a friend who went through the same as you, and the pregnancy ended naturally a few days after her scan, but today they told me there’s someone who is currently pregnant and had the same issue at the start - so it really could go either way this early on. I’m trying to stay negative, as for me the disappointment is too hard. Hope you’re doing ok, this is an awful time.

How late is your cycle and ovulation? I've a 36 day cycle and day 25 ovulation so instead of being 7 weeks, 3, I'm 6, 3. Ot isnt just all about your lmp. Your actually dates matter too.

My previous account was locked so had to create a new one!

I’m so sorry you are going through similar. It honestly is awful. The lady that scanned us said she has seen it quite often. She said it’s pretty much a 50/50 at this point, which isn’t great to hear but I prefer the honesty. Iv told myself I’m no longer pregnant because I’m the same, I’d rather prepare for the heartache now.

At the private scan they advised me to contact the early pregnancy unit so I did and they have asked to see me on Thursday.

My cycle is pretty much bang on 28 days and I usually ovulate day 14-16. I did use ovulation sticks during that cycle too.

Both the lady at the private scan and the lady I spoke to at the Early Pregnancy Unit didn’t seem too bothered about my dates as she said your LMP isn’t always accurate if you know exactly when you convinced.

ahhh that’s rubbish, I’m sorry the odds aren’t better. By LMP I’d be 7w, if I went off date of positive OPK it would be 7w but if I went off BBT dip then I’d be 6w now 🤷 honestly it doesn’t matter, it will either be fine at the next scan or it won’t. And even if it’s fine at the next scan, it could still not be fine in 2 weeks.

If they aren't concerned I would take them at face value. These things are completely out of our control. Wishing you all the best.

Hi OP,
I had my scan at 7+2, baby was measuring 6+6 with a HR of 112. I was told all ok. Fast forward to a private scan at 10wks which showed my baby had died at 7. The sonographer was shocked I was told 112 was fine as very low and she reckons that was a telltale sign baby wouldn’t make it.

7nationbaby · 04/09/2025 20:18

@PlanBFertility that’s awful, I’m sorry.

how are you getting on @fromonemumtoanothermum22? I am bleeding and cramping quite a bit now so I think I’m out.

I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s honestly so shit.

I went to the Early Pregnancy Unit yesterday where they scanned me and confirmed the HR is still 78bpm but the baby has grown. On Saturday baby was 1.5mm and yesterday it was 4.8mm. I’m in the waiting game again as I have to go back next Thursday for another scan to see if the HR has improved. The lady said it’s still 50/50 at this point.

@fromonemumtoanothermum22 I’m sorry it’s just more waiting - I really hope it goes ok for you. It’s absolutely brutal having this agonising ‘could go either way’ situation. Hopefully you’re got lots to distract yourself! I’m away at a massive family wedding over 4 days so absolutely horrendous timing - I don’t want to tell my (toxic) family I’m having a mc so just hoping the bleeding doesn’t go mental over that timeframe.
