Spotting brown and red on Cyclogest and panicking! Any success stories?

Hi all,

So I’m on 400mg Cyclogest pessaries three times daily due to having 5 recurrent miscarriages. At 5w6d after I used one I went to the toilet and there was a small amount of brown discharge. I rang the midwife who was very sympathetic but also said I was quite early for a scan. She also said it is a common side effect of the pessaries. I have a scan booked with the EPU when I’m 7w1d but said If I had any more to ring her straight away and see if they could get me in sooner. But it stopped as soon as it started really and that was it.

Fast-forward to today, I’m 6w6d again after the pessary this morning I went to the toilet and had a small amount of brown discharge. I was a little alarmed again but assumed it would just stop like last time. I did my second pessary of the day and have just been to the toilet again after and there’s a lot more brown discharge when I wiped and a tinge of red which has really sent me into a tailspin. Of course it’s bank holiday so I can’t
contact anyone and don’t think it’s a case for going down the the hospital now as I know they won’t scan me. My scan is on Wednesday and I don’t think they’ll be able to get me in any sooner.

Im not sure what I’m hoping for but maybe just a bit of hope? Whenever I’ve had brown discharge/bleeding in the past it’s always been bad news. But I’ve also had MMCs when on progesterone twice daily with absolutely no bleeding.

I’m also on low dose asprin so again unsure if things are a little irritated down there I’d be likely to bleed more?

Thanks for reading x

I'm so sorry for your losses and can't even imagine the worry you must be feeling. I spotted on cyclogest and had some other uncomfortable side effects. After discussing with my doctor she reassured me that cyclogest can cause cervical irritation and spotting. So between the spotting and side effects I got the ok to use them rectally instead and all was ok from then on. I know the wait until Wednesday will feel tortuous, but fingers crossed for you that everything looks good on the scan and it will be put down to just cervical irritation. I would really recommend asking if you can use it rectally. Sending you good thoughts for Wednesday.

Sorry to hear about your losses, I had a very similar experience on cyclogest which has a happy ending. I was put on cyclogest at 5 weeks after a previous loss. I started spotting at 6 weeks, it started brown then went pink and it was on and off for a few days. They scanned me at 7 weeks and there was a baby with a heartbeat, measuring 5 days behind. The bleeding started again shortly after that but they wouldn’t scan me as it was too close to my last scan. The bleeding stopped then started again at 9 weeks, this time bright red, I was sure it was all over but they scanned me and baby was there measuring just two days behind with a heartbeat. I didn’t have any more bleeding after that and it went on to be a successful pregnancy, my daughter was born earlier this month 🩷 They put my bleeding down to cervical irritation from the pessaries. I really hope this pregnancy is a success for you too x

@Poster2233
thank you so much for your quick and kind response ❤️
sorry you experienced the same but thank you so much for sharing, I really am hoping things are just a little irritated and it’s just a bit of bleeding from my cervix. I’ll definitely ask about using them rectally as the stress of this random spotting is really hard.

Thanks so much for your well wishes x

I really hope mine is cervical irritation like yours, it was the bit of red which really worried me 😓

Thank you so much for your well wishes and congratulations on the birth of your daughter x

Just wanted to give a little update on here, my heads a bit scrambled! So unfortunately my
bleeding didn’t increase but went more red in colour over the next day and I was convinced I was miscarrying. Had my scan today and I am meant to be 7w1d going off my LMP. There were 2 sacs but one measured 5w1d and one measured 5w2d. Twins!! But super concerned as to why they are measuring so far behind 😓 the sonographer did have a bit of trouble as my uterus was tilted and I have read this can make you measure behind as they can’t get decent measurements due to position, although she didn’t say this and I saw the 2 sacs on the screen so assume she could measure them okay. I’ve got another scan in a week to measure any progress. The scan also didn’t give any reason for my bleeding so unsure about that.

I’m hoping for a miracle or two ❤️ x
