I have recently returned to work. Myself and another person were colleagues, we had the same line manager with slightly different jobs. I have come to work to be told that they want one of us to be in charge and to become the other ones line manager. They have described it as a restructure and not a promotion or demotion for either. They have picked the other person, so now she has become my line manager. I feel a bit disgruntled as before I went on mat leave I had to teach her my part of the job, so if I hadn’t gone on mat leave she wouldn’t know how to do it all.
Do you think this could be described a maternity/pregnancy discrimination?

What was the process of the other person being picked? Even if it’s not a promotion/demotion, being a line manager is a developmental opportunity and comes with additional responsibilities which you can use for career progression in the future. I will ask what the selection process was and if you both were offered fair and equal opportunity to be considered for the role.

We were originally told to pick between ourselves. Then when we couldn’t, our line manager said he could chat to us about the future but made it clear it wasn’t an interview. But I had said I was just finding my feet and trying to catch up on the year so not sure I would know what to say. The other person declined. So he didn’t. He’s a new line manager so I have never worked with him as he went into that role while
i I was off on mat leave
