Is this pregnancy related or should I be worried? (Warning - foot related pic!)

Hi Everyone,
Apologies if this is a daft question. I am 31 weeks pregnant and did the funny dance of trying to remove and reapply nail Polish to my toes this evening only to discover that one of my nails has blackened. As per standard practise, I have googled and am now freaking out about subungal melanoma. Has anyone had anything like this during pregnancy or otherwise? Feeling pretty scared, thanks

Posting as a layperson rather than medical expert- that looks like a bruise. The pics I’ve seen of melanoma under the nail have been a discrete line. Have you bashed your toe or worn tight shoes?

Handeyethingyowl · 14/08/2025 21:20

It looks like a bruise to me. Have you bashed it without realising?

HappySummerDays · 14/08/2025 21:21

I'd be fairly sure that is a bruise. I think a melanoma would be there for quite a while to get to that stage - also google 'Hutchinson's stripe'.
When did you last do your nails?

Thanks ladies, I needed to hear this. Feel like my anxiety has generally ramped up throughout pregnancy. Don't remember bashing it or wearing shoes that are too tight but its been about a month since I last painted my toenails so could have been a while ago. Would you contact GP or just monitor it? Thanks again

My dh had an urgent appointment with a dermatologist last year when his gp panicked when he saw a very similar toenail situation (dh had gone for a full MOT). Dermatologist said it would take quite a while (months) for a melanoma to get that big and he was absolutely confident it was a bruise. It grew out over about 3 months.
However for your own absolute peace of mind maybe ask for it to be looked at next time you see your midwife.

I'm a midwife and I would send you to your GP for that. Doubt it's pregnancy related. Don't wait for your midwife appointment, contact your GP!

Eagerlywaiting1990 · 14/08/2025 21:45

Thanks @PinkPrawns2 i appreciate your perspective. I'll give them a call in the morning and at least get a picture sent their way

Could be a bruise or fungal infection. I’d get it checked asap from the GP, not because I think it’s anything sinister, but you don’t want this worry hanging over you when you should be enjoying these special and precious months of pregnancy! X

mummysmagicmedicine · 14/08/2025 21:53

Probably harmless but definately speak to gp if not midwife. I imagine you’ll be absolutely fine lovely but esp when you’re pregnant you can never be too safe xxx

My big toe looks exactly the same at the moment, if I drop something you can guarantee that it lands on my big toe🤦‍♀️ often I don't even remember doing it til I see the bruise🤷

Eagerlywaiting1990 · 14/08/2025 22:20

Thanks ladies, ill err on the side of caution for the sake of my own sanity and give the GP a call. I really appreciate all of your input xx
