I have had on and off spotting for the last 5 days and have no midwife yet as she is unavailable till mid June.
I spoke to the doctor and have been reffered to the early pregnancy unit to have a scan.
I thought they would just say "spotting is very common so there's nothing to worry about". Wasn't expecting to be sent for a scan.
I have endometriosis and wonder if thats why they are playing safe?
Can a heartbeat be picked up at this early stage?(about 6 weeks).
Really nervous now could do with a hug.

At 6 weeks there may be a heartbeat, but there may not (and if not it could still be a viable pregnancy).

You will almost certainly be fine. I've read that a third of women bleed in their first trimester, so try not to worry (impossible, I know, but worrying won't help).

And hugs.

((((hug!))) It is common so try not to worry, but its better to go for a scan just to make sure everything is ok. As for detecting a heartbeat in not sure, i dont think one can be detected at this stage (could be wrong) but they will be able to see if everything is normal. Good luck x

I bled from weeks 5 -8, and I can't even count how many times I have posted this information, as it is such a frequent concern on MN. I remember the horror I felt when I went to the loo and realised.

I had a scan in the EPU at 5.5 weeks, when just a sac was seen, and again at 7 weeks, when a heartbeat was detected. The EPU were brilliant, and I was just relieved that I could get it checked out.

Dd is 1yo now, btw! Bleeding was never explained.

PS I had early bleeding too, and my friend had it until quite far into the pregnancy. The babies are fine.

GreenElizabeth · 29/05/2008 15:46

I had to have a scan at 7 wks. They picked up a heart beat. I bled with my first dc, but it was never RED and never as heavy as a period. I had slight momentary cramps, but not painful cramping. HTH.

GL. I hope it's good news.

NF - over the three week period that I bled, mine went from spotting, to very heavy. I was on holiday from weeks 6-7 and had to leave the dinner table as blood had leaked all over my shorts. TMI?

I was taken by ambulance (being sick into a binbag) to a Spanish hospital in the middle of nowhere, where they tried to convince me to go for a scan to another hospital. I refused, based on the fact that I knew if I was miscarrying, there wasn't a great deal I could do about it anyway.

Needless to say, not a great holiday experience, but just to reassure you, that even in that most dramatic fashion, it all turned out fine.

Thanks for all your comfoting words.
I bled with my first dc but much later in the pregnancy-cervical erosion (sp?).
I wasn't to concerned about the spotting till they said i was to have a scan.
Will let you know how it went.

Comforting not comfoting

I ended up having early scans with both my dc. I don't think it is THAT unusual to be offered an early scan, so try not to read too much in to it.

When is it?

nobodysfool · 29/05/2008 21:28

in the morning.

It's normal to scan when there is bleeding in the first trimester to check the embryo is actually in the uterus and not elsewhere.

I had a bleed for a week and two scans three weeks apart to find out why (one was very early), I'm now 31 weeks pregnant and still none the wiser as to why I bled.

Good luck.

Pinkjenny · 30/05/2008 09:03

Sending you hugs this morning ((((()))))

nobodysfool · 30/05/2008 16:33

Thanks pinkjenny x
Had the scan and they said everything looked as it should at this stage.
I am only 5 weeks pg so there was no proper sign of the baby yet apart from the sac.I'm going back for another scan in 3 weeks so hopefully we will see much more then.
They said the spotting was fine as everything seemed to be going well.
Thanks again for all the support last night you are all wonderful ladies.
