Maternity leave as a teacher

Hi all,

im due mid Jan and wanted to start my Mat leave first day of spring term with last day of the Christmas term as my last day in school due to the Christmas break.

if I was to give birth during the Christmas holidays would that trigger my Mat leave or would I still be able to start 5 Jan?

i plan to look at the shared parental leave once my Mat pay has finished to take 12 months. It’s such a shame that many people don’t know about it considering they don’t accumulate holidays like another profession

I think it kicks in the day the baby is born if they arrive before the date you’ve put down. I was due early August, we’re in Leicestershire so summer hols start around 10th July and so I put my due date to start my official mat leave start date but as he was born late July it started on the date he was born.

If you give birth during the Christmas holidays just don’t tell them. They won’t ask. Send an email with a photo when you’re ready and say baby is here, there’s no need to be specific about their birthday. I have a friend in this position, her second baby is due in the first week of Sept so her mat leave starts on 1st Sept but if it comes early she plans to just not mention it.

It doesn’t work like that 😂

Your maternity leave starts when the baby is born.
