There’s no need to have bought anything by 17 weeks.

I think it’s broadly sensible to late until later anyway, if money is an issue saving might be a better idea than spending now anyway.

I didn’t buy anything with my first until my third trimester. He arrived 5 weeks early and we only had a cot and pram, so we sent my mum a big shopping list while we were in hospital to get everything we needed!

Try not to worry though. You will not jinx anything. I get it, and I’ve felt like that myself, but buying something or getting excited will not make anything bad happen.

Pinklemonade37 · 11/08/2025 14:53

I had anxiety in my pregnancy due to a previous loss so didn’t buy anything until third trimester.

I definitely wouldn’t be worried at 17 weeks that you haven’t got anything yet x

Ivf4203 · 11/08/2025 15:03

We’re about the same weeks and I haven’t bought anything either (my sister and MIL bought a few things). I have started researching as there are loads of options for each baby item but plan to buy maybe after the 20 week scan or maybe wait even until 24. I’m also anxious like you and I get that it’s a way of protecting our heart, but getting excited will not jinx it.

One advice though that I got here on MN is to look into childcare as early as possible if you will be working/going back to work after mat leave. Nurseries get booked really quickly, if that’s something you’re considering. Good luck OP.

Tillow4ever · 11/08/2025 15:11

I didn’t buy anything apart from a cute outfit I saw until after the 20 week scan. In fact, I think I even waited until 24 weeks so I had officially reached “V-Day” (viable).

If you are worried you’re too disorganised, but don’t have the funds yet and don’t want to jinx anything, could you start making a list of what you need, and nice to haves. Then start researching costs? Maybe look at Gumtree/ebay/FB Marketplace etc to see what you can pick up second hand (with our third we had gotten rid of everything after our second as we thought we were done so we tried to replace as cheaply as possible). I got a lovely, barely used Moses basket for virtually nothing that way for example.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, good luck for your scan and the rest of your pregnancy.

bluebunnyjacket · 11/08/2025 15:16

Christ I didn't get anything until well into 30 weeks. You're fine, i wouldn't buy before my 20 week scan anyway

WildFinch · 11/08/2025 15:22

I haven't bought anything either..I've done research into what I'll need but previous loses have made me cautious. I was going to wait until after 20 week scan and maybe look for some bargains in autumn sales. I've been keeping an eye on FB marketplace too.

ChangingChances89 · 11/08/2025 15:47

thanks every1 its helpin me feel less like im messin up already. ive already got a list so maybe i’ll just keep an eye out for bargains but wait til after my scan. feels a bit less scary knowin im not the only 1 whos waitin.

Don’t worry yet, there’s plenty of time. What is worth doing is getting a few lists going and planning how to save for bigger things. Then as you go along ask advice from others about which buggy or which car seat etc and you can adapt your lists. My DD is almost 6 months pregnant and it’s all about the lists.
I’d definitely look on Vinted first for anything you like as you can save so much money.
My DD is now reselling all her first little ones clothes on Vinted as this one is the opposite sex. Making lots of money ready for baby number two.
Gpod luck ☺️

ididitandthatsgood · 11/08/2025 15:51

Ahhh just seen you’re on the case with the list! We cross posted.

DidIdotheritething · 11/08/2025 15:51

Do you have any of the stuff from the others?

I would wait til after your big scan anyway just in case.

DidIdotheritething · 11/08/2025 15:52

Definitely look gumtree and Vinted and the like!!

Hi do you know what you are having ? I have loads of girls stuff in perfect condition towels blankets clothes right up until 18months shoes socks vests you name in I would be more than happy to give you it. Depending obviously on where you are ?

FigPig · 11/08/2025 16:05

I’m a bit ahead of you and don’t have anything. It’s fine - there is absolutely loads of time. I don’t want all that crap cluttering up my house before it actually needs to be there.

My plan is to make a slew of bigger purchases around Black Friday. I’m aware that those deals are often available throughout the year, but they’ll all happen at once. It’s also much closer to my due date, but enough space that I hopefully won’t be caught with nothing if the baby is early. I am financially secure enough to make all the big purchases at once though - could you use the time to save? If not then perhaps buying little and often is the better plan.

ChangingChances89 · 11/08/2025 16:09

yeah i kept some sleepsuits from ds4 but not loads coz i thought i was done 🙈 gonna check vinted n fb market place like ppl said. prob wait til after scan n see how i feel then.

With my first I started researching after the 20 week scan picking things up as and when I could from about 24 weeks but we were trying to get as much as possible second hand it was covid so trying to get stuff in between restrictions coming and going as we were in an area with a lot of local restrictions. I probably would have waited until 30 weeks otherwise.

I'm 33 weeks with number 2 now and have kept most things and so far have only bought 1 sleepsuit picked by my daughter for the new arrival. Around 26 weeks I went through her clothes to work out what deficits I had and started doing some research into cloth nappies again. I would have bought some more but got gifted loads instead.

I'm now at risk for early delivery so might need a size smaller than we used for MH daughter so I've had a look but not bought anything yet.

Even with my daughter prep was limited to crib, car seat, pram, cloth nappies and wipes, enough clothes for the first few days, a ring sling (only because the woman we got the pram off had one for sale too) and a travel cot. The rest we bought as we needed, if we needed. Nothing was ever more than a day or two away even buying second hand.

ChangingChances89 · 11/08/2025 17:19

aww thats kind thank u ❤️ i dont no what im havin yet so tryin to keep it all neutral til i do. ur right tho theres still loads of time n i think im just gettin in my head bout it. black friday idea sounds good too if i can save a bit by then.

We only brought stuff after the 20w scan both times. No need to buy too early as you don’t want stuff cluttering up your house too early. It’s probably good to research the bigger items though so you know what you want if you do get an early arrival. If buying 2nd hand it can be worth starting early as it can take time to find the right items in the right condition

JuniperandI · 11/08/2025 18:35

I started after my 12 week scan. It still didn't feel real to me then so having some tiny clothes around the house helped me feel like a baby was actually coming home this time! Now I'm 24 weeks and the attic is already half full with things (I'm such a sucker for a sale). Plus we're deciding on colours and wallpaper for the nursery. All the prep has kept my spirits up. It's like..feel emotional and down today? Go and buy some tiny cute clothes! Get the moses basket out! Put the stroller together!

I think it's really individual, and if you already have kids. Do what makes you feel comfortable, you've got so much time 😊

stayathomer · 11/08/2025 18:37

I think I was coming up to 25 weeks then bought vests, babygrows, cardigans, socks and nappies. Best of luck op x
