I had a two day bleed the day my period was due and it stopped completely for 3 days and now I’m having brown stuff come out when I wipe, none in the toilet. I would be around 4.6 weeks or 5 weeks according to my app. My period is usually long 7 days and heavy bleeding. I have an appointment tomorrow to see if I’m pregnant, but me and my partner have been trying to conceive for 4 years with lots of miscarriages so I’m scared. Any advice would be so helpful.

Have you done a home test?

mummyyof1 · 10/08/2025 08:10

I haven’t taken one as of yet, I’m waiting for the doctors tomorrow to do my blood work and hopefully send me for an ultrasound.

You know a test will just tell you now if you are? Unfortunately whether you have a blood test or scan it still won’t tell you if the pregnancy is viable. Only if you are or not.

mummyyof1 · 10/08/2025 09:13

Even if I’m still spotting will it come up

If you have HCG in your system it will show on a test. And if you are almost 5 weeks pregnant then you will have HCG. If you are not pregnant/have lost a pregnancy and HCG is very low then it will be negative on a test and you won’t see anything on a scan either

Thank you so much! 🥰

Are you in the UK? Who is doing your scan? It’s very unusual in the UK at least to be sent for a scan without first confirming pregnancy with a home test. Especially as early as you are. Because quite often at 4-5 weeks absolutely nothing can be seen on a scan so it wouldn’t actually confirm anything.

mummyyof1 · 10/08/2025 11:15

I’m in Australia, it was negative

Ah ok. Are you still going to the appointment tomorrow? I edited my post to add that quite often having a scan at 4-5 weeks won’t show anything as it’s too early anyway so it may not be helpful anyway.

mummyyof1 · 10/08/2025 11:18

I’ll definitely go tomorrow because it’s all so strange to me. I’ve never had brown bleeding ever like this before 😪

And I’m not in pain or anything, just a sore lower back and belly but the belly pain isn’t bad it’s like tugging.. just so disappointed every month due to trying for so many years without luck and so many losses.

I know the feeling. I’ve been trying for 5 years and have had a few miscarriages now. But if I were you I’d just be prepared for them to say you’re not pregnant. It would be incredibly unusual to be 4-5 weeks pregnant and not have a positive pregnancy test.

You won’t get a scan at under 6 weeks. And a doctor won’t refer you to the EPU for bloods if you haven’t even taken a home pregnancy test.

curliegirlie · 10/08/2025 11:48

Ahh, sorry, have just read you’re in Australia and the system’s probably quite different!

mummyyof1 · 10/08/2025 12:11

@Guantaww I’m so sorry, it’s so emotionally draining when you’ve been trying for so long. ✨ sending you lots of baby dust hun, I’m sure our rainbow babies will come to us when we least expect it 🌈

@curliegirlieit works like that in Australia, but if you’ve previously had miscarriages they get you in right away because it’s in your medical file they look at when they’re consulting you. Well it’s always been like that for me. ❤️

Do they just scan you on request then even if you haven’t had a positive test and aren’t necessarily pregnant? In this country they mostly refuse to scan before 6 weeks (even if bleeding and you are confirmed pregnant) unless they suspect an ectopic. Even then they often wait until 6 weeks because they might not see anything before that so can’t confirm if ectopic or not etc

curliegirlie · 10/08/2025 12:46

That’s encouraging, but I still think a pregnancy test beforehand will still give you a quicker idea of what’s going on (and whether or not it was just a weird period).
