Waiting a week to confirm MMC

spamOFtheDAY · 05/08/2025 10:06

Had a scan on Sunday at 6 weeks 3 days and no heart beat
my midwife has booked me in for next Monday to scan again/ confirm

the waiting is torture 😢 I can’t stop crying or function

do you think it is unreasonable to ask to be scanned earlier ie Thursday or Friday when I would be 7 weeks?

or will they just make me wait a whole week anyway

So sorry, I've been in this situation and it's terrible. I hope you're in a much much better place in the future where this will all be a distant memory..

You can ask, I'm not sure they would agree as in some places the standard protocol seems to leave a week on between. I would say ask, the worst they can say is a no ❤️

I'm so sorry you are in the position. It is really hard to wait but its standard practice to wait a week. (I've been there twice). Its so they have a baseline for measurements (the first scan) and a set week difference (the second scan). Its not advised to to the scan earlier and my experience is they won't do it closer than 7 days apart - sometimes 10 days.

she wasnt hopeful of the outcome so has out my name down for surgical management the next day

You have my sympathies. The waiting is torture. Can I ask what they were able to see on the scan? Are you 100% sure of your dates?

totally with you on this. But still 6 weeks and few days are still very early sometimes due to position and different bean act differently. My sis from USA had her first scan at 12 weeks and scanner was not able to see anything. Then she called the gynae, the gynae took her to another room which has old machine and tried pressing/scanning for 10-15 min and finally saw the baby. Now she is 4 years old happy and healthy. I hope you will see your shy bean's HB in next scan.
i am also going through similar situation but my case is worst. what i thought my gest age should be 10 weeks from my first day of last period came out to be 6 weeks 6 days with large haetoma, scanner said missed miscarraige but next day gynae asked to wait for a week as the gest age is shown 6 weeks 6 days only. so, here i am waiting now.

Ah that sounds like torture. So sorry you’re going though this

my early scan was at 6 weeks 3 days. The CRL measured 6.7mm, which dates it right, and the cut off to diagnose a miscarriage is 7mm

the nurse sounded pretty certain on the phone it wouldn’t be a good outcome so I’m prepared for it to be over 😔

an update from my side
i started bleeding last night and went to A & E but they send me back saying i am not bleeding like soaking blood and using new pads every hour so they will still do my scan as schedule. They only told me to take Paracetamol. I am not bleeding continuously rather on and off. So, anyways i have to wait to get told that i miscarried as it can only be determined by scan

Superscientist · 06/08/2025 11:16

I had this too with my pregnancy last autumn. I had a scan that measured 10 days behind but with a heartbeat rescanned 2 weeks later with minimal growth and no heartbeat. These two scans were with the same sonographer. For management of the miscarriage, if necessary, I needed two scans a week apart with different sonographers so I had another week wait. This confirmed the loss, I had started bleeding the night before the last scan so I opted to wait a few days before going through a managed miscarriage. I passed the pregnancy the evening of the last scan.

If it is some hope, I conceived again a few weeks later and am now 32 weeks.

@Superscientist really a hopeful story. i am not sure now but as my miscarraige is progressing and within 1-2months it will be out from my system i may talk to my husband. As i am thinking i should give this another chance

Oh OP I'm so sorry you're going through this. This happened for us about 10 years ago now but they weren't as proactive as your dr's. I had my 12 week scan and there was no heartbeat and the baby was measuring about 7 weeks. They did another scan a week later and had the same results so booked me in the following week for medical management. Was given the tablets and monitored in hospital for several hours then told if it hadn't started to come away after 3 days to ring back. Rang after the 3 days, was booked in for another course of medical management the following week. Same outcome. In the end, 4.5 weeks after finding out we'd had a MMC I went in for a D and C. It was absolutely awful. Knowing for all that time there was a dead baby in me and my body was still changing and producing pregnancy symptoms etc.

I'm really really glad you'll at least be able to get things sorted quickly and begin to heal.

We went on to have another two miscarriages (I've got PCOS and endometriosis) BUT we now have a happy, healthy DD (8).

Wishing you all the best for the coming days OP
