Hi Everyone,

I just had a ‘sweep’ which was unsuccessful.

My midwife said she only managed to get a fingertip through the start of the tunnel and then couldn’t reach the cervix?

Which part did she manage to get her fingertip through then? I’m so confused?? Will it still work as she’s opened something lol?

She said babies head is very much there - i’m just heavily pregnant and fed up haha! 😒

The cervix is kind of a tube so she’s managed to get her fingertip through the external bit but not right through to ‘sweep’ the membranes!

It really doesn’t mean anything though. Even if she’d managed to give you a successful sweep it wouldn’t necessarily start labour, and just because she couldn’t do it doesn’t mean it’ll be ages!

I had a ‘successful’ sweep in that the midwife could do it, but ended up having a planned section a week later because nothing happened other than it making me uncomfy.

My sister in law got told her cervix was too high and closed to even attempt it and she wouldn’t be going into labour any time soon, and she gave birth unexpectedly and very quickly the next day.

Baby will arrive when they’re ready, or in my DDs case, when she was forced to 😂 Hang in there!!

I had a sweep at 41 weeks with both DDs, and labour started within 24 hours. Both born 41 weeks and two days, both active labours 6 hours.

I won’t have any more appointments now until my induction and the one i just had was a failed sweep so looks like i’ll be induced next wednesday if nothing happens naturally in the meantime 😒

She means the cervix it self. When I had a sweep at 40+3 days the midwife said she could tell dd1 had hair as she could feel it 😬that sweep worked
Have you had no cramping since ?

Hey! Midwife just said she could feel the head and that he’s 100% engaged as there is no movement. I’ve been back home about 30 mins now, just feel pressure to be honest, don’t think it will do anything though!

Yes i do but don't want to get my hopes up i guess!! & it was a failed sweep so don’t see how it’s all happening, maybe i’m in denial because i’ve got that far over, i feel like i've been pregnant forever haha

I had cramps too though. Good luck 😁

as PP said it doesn’t really indicate whether or not you will go into labour imminently even if the sweep was successful. With my last pregnancy I had an attempted sweep at 39 weeks but was told that my cervix wasn’t at all favourable so couldn’t do it. I went into labour the next day and had the baby that night

i’ve been having constant back ache since, wonder if this is another sign 👀

Still heavily pregnant - Nothing seems to be happening now apart from the odd twinge here and there!

Oh dear, sounds likes something is slowly happening though

GirlMumxx · 25/07/2025 16:13

Keep getting on and off lower back ache with stomach tightening 😳 nothing too painful to start timing as contractions thought i don’t THINK 😆🤣

Try to relax and take your mind off it as the more relaxed you are the more likely you will go into labour.
I went into labour at 41+6, 1 day before my induction. It was in the early hours but I do wish I waited a bit longer before rushing into hospital, as once I was there my labour slowed down.
Luckily it picked back up again after I had an epidural.
This time around I'm not going to obsess over contractions just going to chill until either I'm in full blown labour or getting my induction. The end result of a healthy baby is all that matters not how they arrive.

I had sweeps with my two (long time ago, they're 21 and 19 now), neither worked, apparently my cervix wasn't within reach. I was induced 7pm in the evening both times at 40 + 13 and 40 + 12, first DS was 8lb 12 born about 4pm the next day, but tricky but we got there, second DS 9lb 13 was born around midday the next day, he was a water birth, really excellent experience. Waters had to be broken both times - I'm not sure if have gone into labour without the inductions, it just wasn't happening.
