Can a pregnancy test 7 days before my period is due be correct?

Hi everyone,
The last few days I’ve been having stomach cramps and a bit of spotting so I thought I’d do an early pregnancy test this morning even though I’m not due on for a week and it came straight back with a strong positive result. I went and got another test at lunch which isn’t an early one and did it when I got home and got another strong positive result straight away. Would a positive test result come at least a week before I’m due to come on and if not what could cause a false positive? We are trying for a baby but I don’t want to get my hopes up. When I was pregnant before I didn’t due a test until I was late and even then it was a faint line.

My last period was a couple of days late and slightly lighter than normal but I did a couple of tests and they came back negative.

Has anyone else had this happen?

You’re probably at least one week further along than you think you are. You wouldn’t get a positive result 7 days before your period is due.

Haveiwon · 20/07/2025 19:21

First, congratulations OP, that’s a fantastic line!

The dates do seem a bit odd though, never seen a week before period due test look like that. Do you test for ovulation? Could you have ovulated earlier than normal?

Also, when did you do the pregnancy tests after your last period? As if it was implantation bleeding instead of period it would still be too early to show up on a test until a few days after.

KatieJaneB · 20/07/2025 19:31

thank you for the replies.

The last test I did was on the date my period was due. They were early tests too and there wasn’t even a faint line.

I’ve added a picture of the second test I did at lunch time today. It isn’t an early one and I did it at lunch time so I was shocked to get another strong positive!

I wonder whether it's possible that your period was an implantation bleed. I suspect that you either ovulated early, or that you're further along than you think!

ClunkyPigeon · 20/07/2025 19:37

I’d bet good money your last ‘period’ was implantation bleeding and you’re 6-7 weeks or so.

Haveiwon · 20/07/2025 19:39

Given you tested the day your period was due i would guess that you ovulated later than normal last period cycle, had an implantation bleed which you thought was your period, and are now about 6/7 weeks pregnant? That is definitely not a 3 weeks pregnant line so something is definitely off with the dates.

Can you get a weeks test? I know they aren’t 100% accurate but would give you more idea as you want to make sure you get your 12 week scan on time!

KatieJaneB · 20/07/2025 20:00

I haven’t really been tracking ovulation as we didn’t want to put pressure on it. I have been tracking my periods which have been regular until last month when it was a few days late. We tried to get a week test today but they didn’t have any so my husband will be on the search to get one tomorrow. I think I’ll also contact my doctor in the morning as I keep getting period like pains. 🤞 hoping it’s a real positive

Sounds a good plan, you might get offered an early scan with the period pain too. Or book a private one if you can in a couple of weeks. You probably do want to confirm when you conceived as if you go to the 12 week scan and are over 13+4 they can’t do the normal test for DS, Edward’s etc. Which is you are 3 weeks further along than you think might happen.

The only thing I’ve ever read about which can cause really high HCG levels is a molar pregnancy, but those are really really rare, much more likely that your dates are out and it was in implantation bleeding.

ThatIsABigSon · 20/07/2025 20:29

I'm sure it will all be absolutely fine and you're just a couple of weeks further on than you thought! Just maybe look up ectopic symptoms as I had something similar happen and it was an ectopic pregnancy. Don't wish to scare you and I'm sure it's not as they're uncommon but just keep in mind. Sending you lots of luck!!

KatieJaneB · 21/07/2025 11:34

I have spoken to my doctor and she’s booking me in for an early dating scan as it’s the onot way of knowing what is going on. She would have assumed I’m around 7-8 weeks if it hadn’t been for the negative test a few weeks ago.

When I was pregnant with twins I had a really strong early pregnancy. I don't know if that's a thing though...

This is definitely a thing.

KatieJaneB · 21/07/2025 22:48

That’s interesting. I did think of that but a lot of the searches I did seemed to say that sometimes twins give false negative results

Good about the dating scan! Sounds like you’ve got a good GP.

Think twins is not that likely as the line was a week before your period, they would have only just implanted- the lines I’ve seen on tests at d7po have been squinters/ can’t photograph it properly/ need to invert it type lines, even with twins! Could still be twins but 6/7 weeks old twins! Good luck for the scan.

I had ivf and tested positive 7 days after transfer so it is possible

IToldYouSoSee · 21/07/2025 23:31

I had period pains for a good couple of weeks before I finally tested for my youngest. Honestly thought I was going to start period any second.

Only tested as prior to that a pregnancy test was generally a guarantee of the period arriving!

justasking111 · 21/07/2025 23:36

Period pains, sore boobs, tiredness. Sense of taste, smell altered @KatieJaneB ??

That’s totally different. The OP has tested positive 7 days before her period. 7 days after transfer works out to be about 12dpo (assuming 5 day blast) which in normal cycle terms is 2 days before period. 7 days before period would be about 2 days after transfer.

babbi · 22/07/2025 06:14

Like Previous poster also said I had a very early positive but it was twins !
Good luck OP .

244milesnorth · 22/07/2025 06:33

Could be twins but also could be a blighted ovum as you get very quick very very high hcg levels with that too

I don’t think that’s the case. A blighted ovum is just a pregnancy sac where the embryo didn’t develop. I’ve had two and had perfectly normal HCG levels. Google also seems to say HCG will either rise normally or slowly. Are you thinking of a molar pregnancy?

244milesnorth · 22/07/2025 07:45

@Mallkyah yes a molar! That’s the one I was thinking

Cmac1890 · 13/02/2026 23:05

Period still due in 7 days however took this test yesterday and can clearly see a blue line very faint but blue… is this an evap line or faint positive

Yeah the same thing happened to me! I was further along than I thought.
